I didn't know I had one, but he repaired it during the band surgery. There was no extra fee for the hernia repair. Becky

Didn't know I had a hiatial hernia either until the Dr. told me afterwards. No big deal, he said it might make for a bit harder recovery, but good to get it fixed. Completely cured my heartburn until I got almost as tight as I wanted..then it came back. Oh well..worth it nonetheless.

Wow, I didn't realize that a hernia was so common but yes, my doctor fixed mine while he was there with no charge. He said he had to place the port right near the hernia so he stitched it. A stitch in time saves 9, the old saying goes. I'm dating myself now but that ok! Go October bansters!!!!!

I am in the process of talking to doctors, etc. I have chose a doctor, and applied for financing. The doctor explained to me that 85% of overweight people who have this surgery have a hernia, and dont even know it. So, they suggested that I finance an extra $1500, just in case I need the repair. If not needed, then I can just get the money back. ....... Sound legit? :rolleyes2:

Yes, it's extremely common that obese patients have a hiatal hernia, and having it repaired at the same time reduces your risk of reoperation.

If you want to know for certain if you really have one, and if you have health insurance, go to your PCP and tell them you have symptoms of a hiatal hernia (look them up) and ask if it can be detected (I think it's a barium swallow or endoscopy). If he says no, then approach a gastroenterologist and make the request. Your health insurance should cover teh exam. Then you'll know for sure.

If you don't have health insurance, I would go ahead and add the $1500. It's for your health to have it repaired, and chances are you have it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
