Had my consult today and am excited

Recommended Posts

Met w/ Dr Adam Goldstein today, and am ready to start my journey. I have made my first appt. w/primary for tomorrow night. and will make the appt. for pulmonary and ekg within the next 2wks. My insurance company he said, from his experience, is pretty good. They are not as difficult to get approvals. They are going to check to make sure how long I have to participate in the New beginnings program (wt. mgmt), but they believe it's only 3months. He also let me know that when everything on the check list is complete, I will come back for the pre-surgical consult and have everything submitted to the insurance company. I am soooooooooo excited. I'm hoping to get thru this procedures in the next 45days, and will try and start New beginnings this wk. I have to call tomorrow and make the appt. I am sorry for rambling, just so excited.

Dawn, that is great news. It sounds like you are well under way in the process to getting banded. Keep us posted on how things are progressing and let us know if you have any questions along the way.

Hi Dawn,

I meet with Dr. Goldstein this Friday and I'm very excited about it. I've been waiting since the 4th of July to see him!!!

Please keep this thread going and post of your success with getting all the items off of your checklist and I'll do the same!

Take care and good luck!

Here's my update: I meet w/PCP tonight. Made my appt. w/New beginnings for the 25th of Sept. I will do my lab on Saturday Morning(9/13/08) So, that will leave me with; Pulmonary, sleep study, barium swallow(for hiatal hernia), EKG, and wt. loss records for the last 5yrs.

The 5yr. history will be pretty easy, because I only did Bally's, weight watchers, and Curves. So pretty easy to get those records. I'll keep u posted.

Hey Dawn,

Met with Dr. G. today. Went really well and I'm psyched. I will be reviewing my checklist tonight with my hubby and getting the appointments made asap.

Will email you over the weekend. Good luck with all the bloodwork on Saturday.

HI Claricey,

That is great. I had my appt w/primary on 9/10 and also got my EKG done during that visit. I made my appt w/Pulmonary for the 18th, and will have the barium swallow that morning, so since I have to be npo for that exam, I will wait 'til the 18th for the lab work. On Monday, I will run to Bally's, WW and Curves for my hx of wt loss attempts. Then on the 25th I have my initial meeting w/New Beginnings. That would complete my list, except for 3-6month monitored wt program. I also have to have a Chest xray before I go to the pulmonolgist. Not sure why, but I'll have to call my primary and get that done on tues.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
