Weight Loss and Sleep Apnea

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I was wondering if anyone who sleeps with a c-pap for sleep apnea has needed to get their machine adjusted.

I haven't used it in about a month and I just begain to use it again. Now it seems that there is too much airflow. It's blowing my mouth open as I sleep.< /p>

Anyone else experience this?

Thanks

I am a faithfull c-pap wearer, i have been for two years. My presure was set on 13 and after 120 lbs weight loss, my doctor has lowered it to a 10 just until i finish my weight lose, then he is going to do a sleep over test to see exactly where i need to be. It is very common that when your weight changes so does your settings. If you haven't wore your machine in awhile, it is also common for it to feel like there is to much pressure. Try to use the ramp setting on your machine and if that doesn't work for you, i would contact your sleep apnea doctor and see if they can temporarly adjust it until you are all done with weight lose. If you are done then you probably should go in for another sleep test to get it set properly.

Yes, mine had to be adjusted once the air starts escaping out of your mouth...I started out at 16, then to a 13, and now am down to a 7. I have about 25 more pounds to go before goal and I am probably going to have another test to see if I still need it.

I also had my C-pap lowered after I lost my first 60 pounds. To find out if I still need it my doc wants me to do another ($1,200) sleep study. Besides budget reasons, I really enjoy my machine - it soothes me to sleep, so for now I'm keeping it.

Using the ramp feature is a good idea to ease you back into it.

Good luck!

About three months after being banded I had my machine adjusted. I also have had problems wearing the mask/nose pice at night so the doctor sent me to the dentist and got a herbest retainer and have not had many problems. I will be one year next week and will have a sleep study to see how well I have done before I had the band. I was 250 at the sleep study and now down almost 65 lbs. Will let everyone know how the test goes. When I saw the sleep doctor the other day he thought I was doing great and notice changes and said it was time to see how Iam doing. I went from a 13-14 down to a 4 but mainly stay around 7 or 8 I have an auto type of machine.

My brother was wondering if those retainers were comfortable. Have you had any issues with it thanks, Nancy.

Hi Pixel

I am a RPSGT, I am the person that does your sleep studies and yes, you will most likely need a pressure adjustment after weight loss. Depending on how close you are to your goal weight, I suggest contacting the lab and requesting a pressure adjustment even if it is just until your goal weight is achieved. At my location we would have no problem with lowering you a few CM of H20 (pressure) and then once your at your goal have another study to see if you even need it. There is no use in getting a study done in the middle of your weight loss when you will most likely need another shortly down the road. Also there is no reason you should be not using your CPAP and compromising you overall treatment because it's at un tolerable pressure. If you have any questions or problems mail me.

Hi Nancy:

If you have every had any orthodontic work, Ie braces and retainers, weather it was for tooth movement or told hold them in place. It will be just the same type of retainer and feel. There are many devices out there and when you go to the sleep apnea dentist they will help you picl what is right for you. My Dr. felt that I would doo good with the herbest retainer. I have had not any problems with wearing it at night at all.

Chris

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
