how long till we can try to have a baby?

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

My surgery is September 30th, and I was wondering how long after the lap band do my husband and I have to wait to have kids?

I was hoping for 6 months to a year after? :blushing::thumbup:

Thanks in advance!

My doctor said that I should wait a year. He said no reason behind it. Just to give you time to heal and adjust. However, he said that he has had patients get pregnant after 6 months and didn't have any problems.

My surgeon says one year, but not because of the band or the surgery itself, but because you'll have a healthier pregnancy if you've lost the excess weight first, and you need that much time to lose the weight. If you don't care if you lose the weight first, I'd put off the surgery and have the baby now. You'll need complete unfill as soon as you find out you're pregnant anyway.

My doc says one year and unlike AFW's doc, he said (although I'm 53 and it's not pertinent to me, he made me repeat this anyway LOL I guess that's how strongly he feels) I risk my life AND that of the baby if I don't allow my band to heal etc. I didnt ask how or why; I suggest you ask your surgeon.

My first Dr. said 18 months to allow enough time for weight loss. However, my Dr. who is doing my surgery on the 29th (yay!!) said he doesn't have a preference and he usually leaves it up to the patient. The reason I am having a lap band placed is so I can hopefully get pregnant. So, my thinking is to lose as much weight possible before we start trying to conceive. That way, I will have a much healthier pregnancy and be a lot more comfortable.

Thank you so much! I think I should wait to lose atleast 60 pounds before I try to get preggo. I never really thought of it the way you'd explained. It really makes sense. :blushing::cry_smile:

Thanks again!

That is why I got banded...I have PCOS which makes me infertile due to nonexistent ovulation. I am hopeful with losing weight I might start ovulating and be able to have a baby.

My doctor says to wait for at least 2 years for the weight loss to stabilize. He says that if you get pregnant before that you can risk malnutrition of you and the fetus due to the lack of nutrients you will be receiving from the smaller portions of food and Vitamins alone can't help. So be careful.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
