I had my first fill & almost passed out!

Recommended Posts

What a wimp I am!!!...and I'm an RN too!!! I guess it just goes to show you that just because you can do procedures to other people doesn't mean you are ok when they are done on you.

I went to Dr. Kelly Fitzpatrick in Portland. She was so nice and kind. She made me feel very comfortable. She found my port easily by palpation and had me stand up for the fill. I was doing ok at first, but then I started getting really hot and sweaty. Dr. Kelly and husband said I got really pale and lost all color. She had me sit down and then lie down when things started to get spacey and I felt like I was going to pass out. She had my husband wet a cloth for my head. After a few minutes, when I had started to recover, we went through the whole drinking Water thing. It was difficult to know what I was feeling exactly, but I think I'm ok. I was having a sensation in my throat like I have to burp as I was leaving, but she said it should go away. If not, I am supposed to come back tomorrow. I feel a little sore but I'm sure that is normal. I am supposed to be on thin fluids for 24 hours, then soft foods for 24 hours, and then regular food. I am sipping some Decaf tea right now.

So, that's my first fill. I hope I'm not too tight, but I guess tomorrow will tell. I got 1.4 cc. Despite the excitement, I really liked Dr. Kelly and am excited to have her follow the rest of my medical care as well.

Heather:

So glad to hear you liked Dr. Fitzpatric, as I am going to give her a call for my next fill. Dr. Eubanks has been my after care Dr., but as you know, he is not doing fills anymore. I live on the coast, in Bandon, so it is a 5 hr. drive up to Portland, but understand that she will be opening an office in Eugene in the near future, and that would be quite convenient for me. I went to her website and did read that she has the availability of fluro, if needed. My port is titled a bit, and a little hard to access, so would feel more comfortable with it.

Wishing you continued success in this journey.

That is cool to know that she has access to flouro. I'll have to check out that website. Does anyone know the web address and how much her flouro is? Thanks Teresa

Her website is www.gastricbands.com

I don't know how much flouro is. She refers you to somewhere else for that. She did say that she recommends it every 6 months to a year to check out the status of the band, port, and tubing.

Donali...Wow!!! I guess I did do a little better than you did. That is wild. Hopefully next time I won't get so wigged out. I think just knowing that the needle was sticking out and feeling her skid over my port was just too much. I know I definitely won't be going there alone anytime soon.

I made my DH come with me. For my fill. I'm the same woman who doen't blink at a D&C with a spinal all alone in ID, but I had so many tears with my fill my ears filled with tears!

Vines...I plan on DH coming with me for all future fills. I still can't believe that I have no issues sticking needles in other people, but I can't cope when it's me...too funny.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
