Diarreha and cramping?

Recommended Posts

I just got banded 4 days ago and have nonstop diarreha...sorry my spelling sucks. I had mine done in a hospital and was not allowed liquids until more than 24 hours after my surgery. This is when the diarreha began. Now just about every two hours I get it. Is this normal? I dont see much about it in other posts.

Also, I have HORRIBLE pains in the right side of my abdomen. As far as I know, there was nothing done to this side of me. Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks for any advice!!!

I had the same problem the first week, but it did not continue into the second week. I think it is very common. I also had cramping . . . but it was definitely related to the diarreah.

I had the same issue as you It was horrible. It lasted 2-3 days and then went away. Your body went thru a huge shock with surgery and a diet change. I called my doctor just to be sure it was ok and they had me take imodiam (spelled wrong oops) AD and that helped me. Ask your doctor if its ok to take this medicine first. I wish you the best and stay strong

I also had diarrhea and cramping and come to find out it was from all the ;actose I was drinking with my carnation Breakfast, once I switched to lactaid milk it went away. I would call your dr. for safety reasons but I would bet that this will be the reason!!! The cramping is also probably from the diarrhea. Good luck it will go away!!

I am 3 weeks post-op and still have the cramping and diarrhea. I have started some real food (mashed potatoes-made with chicken broth not milk, canned tuna and chicken, hard cheese) and that may have helped a little. My Dr was worried about dehydration and electrolites so I had bloodwork done last Fri---no results as yet. I think that mine may be linked to lactose also. I have switched to soy and lactose free milk, too, it's not as bad as it sounds. My "nut" has said that it may or may not be permanent...time will tell. Hang in there, things do get better with time.

I also had this problem. When I asked my Dr. he said it was probably because he had given me a strong antibiotic for infection and sometimes it knocks out the good with the bad, I had to take it for a week, then it went away.

I had is super bad for the first week...so bad that I shit myself a couple of times, which was rather traumatic. Even now, and I was banded on 8/29, I will still have some. to try and remedy it, I have been doing the following (and it seems to be working):

1. add benefiber to everything!

2. take lactase for lactose intolerance. you can get it at any drug store.

3. eat mashed potatoes (if possible).

4. drink 1 probiotic yogurt drink per day (or more if you feel like it)

hope these help!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
