I am home from surgery from 9/5/08

Recommended Posts

Hey ladies,

I am home from having my surgery. Discomfort yes, pain... No. I thank you for you prayers.

So here is the lowdown...it took about an hour for the whloe thing to happen. I would suggest that if your insurance company pays for you to stay overnight ... Do it. I am so happy I did. Any questions I had I could ask on the spot and there were other surgery sistas on my floor that I could visit with.

Another tip... Get your butt up and walk as soon as you feel up to it. You will pass a lot of gas but avoid those latent gas pains that come later as I have read in the chatrooms. I feels so much better since I have started walking.I walked my cul-d-sac twice today... And aouind the front and b ackyard today.

Staying in the hospital overnight also let's someone monitor your progrss.

Today I went back to my liquids and shakes and still practiced my breathing that I learned from the respitory therapist. I have had two shakes, 2 bottles of Water and a sf,ff popsicle and I am stuffed... No bullcrap...I mean...tummy tight stuffed.

If you have any questions let me know and I will give it to ya straight.

Congratualtions and I am glad to hear that you are mending well. I have my surgery in 2 weeks. I am getting nervous. But thanks to bandsters like you who give a personal account of your experience so that I can get an idea of what to expect. I wish you the best.

Congratulations and I am so happy to hear you are doing well. It sounds as if you are doing just what has been suggested at UMASS from the staff and during the meetings: get off your butt ASAP. A couple of years ago I had a hysterectomy and I got up IMMEDIATELY - I had been back from recovery and that napping from the anesthesia...and BANG. I made myself walk around the bed, then a little further. I just wanted to heal better. Also, being active prior to the surgery is a great help to a speedier recovery. So happy for you. Cannot wait until I am that far along. Just having it scheduled will be awesome! Nightie-night.

Love

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
