Just Banded June 13th...

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I was told I needed to come out and introduce myself. I am a 31 year old mother of 1 (2 yr old boy) and very loving and supporting husband. We live in Concord, (right outside of Charlotte, NC) I started over a year and half ago looking into the band. I knew gastric was not for me and I wanted and needed help. So a friend told me about the lap band. From then I started looking into it with my husband by my side. He has been a wonderful support along with my mom.

I have been reading this board for a while now and was encourged even more to get out and look at it from my Dr's office. this site has been very helpful and informative. Thanks to who ever started it. I feel with this support my new life is just around the corner.

Unlike alot of people out there, my insurance approved me within 3 days of receiving the paperwork. So I am very happy with them. Thanks UHC...

So that where I am in a nut shell 4 days post op and ready to start my new life...well if I just get rid of the gas pressure and pain. Which I know will go away with time.

I look forward to learning a lot more and meeting alot of new friends...

Thanks

First weigh in 316

Day of surgery 301.8

Goal...I am not sure just but I want to start with at least 100 pounds at a time.

Welcome to bandland Kim! The gas pains will leave soon, just keep walking and if you need to use a heating pad for pain. The more walking you do the better the pains get. Good luck and glad to have you aboard!

Yay Kim! See how nice everyone is? So glad you introduced yourself. I'm hoping the few Charlotte folks can plan a little get-together sometime soon. Let's get you healed up a little better, first! Congrats! You are doing great!

editing to add:

Hey Kim, just curious...since you are in Concord, how come you didn't go to Dr Bauman in Concord? (Angie-Bondgirl is seeing him for her surgery) Just wondering. I haven't really heard good/bad/otherwise about Bauman or Voellinger, just wondering what took you into Charlotte?

I went to seminars with both Dr's. I meet with both of them and talked to different patients of both Dr's. I liked Dr. Voellinger the best and that is I went with. It was truely just my personal opinion and who I felt the most comfortable with. I don't want people to think I don't like Dr. Bauman, I just don't think he would have been the right choice for me.

Thanks for asking...

I'll be using Dr. Voellinger as well. I'm doing all the pre testing right now. All I have left is the psychiatric evaul, and the egd both of which are scheduled, well at least initial appointments are. I was told that I might not have to do the exercise evaul because I turned in copies of my workouts for the last year and half with my initial paperwork...but i'm worried not going ahead and scheduling it might slow me down in getting my paperwork sent to the insurance. I may just go ahead a schedule it anyway. How lond did it take you to get surgery scheduled once you meet with him and had insurance approval? I have United Health Care too. I was told that it was good insurance and rarely has a promblem getting approved. I'm assuming insurance covers the fills as well? It one of my questions to ask at the appointmnet. If ya ever want to meet up just to get to know each other let me know. My kids love going to concord mills so we are up that way quite frequently.

Melissa

Thanks for asking that Kathy! I am very happy with Bauman. I knew a lot of people that went with him and had a bunch of success. So that is why I picked him. I have never heard of the other doctor (sorry cant remember his name right now). I have my surgery with Dr. Bauman on Thursday and I can't wait to get on here and let everyone know how it went.

We really do need to get together. This is great Kathy! We are getting a bunch of newbie's in here. I think this is going to be a great support system. BTW, I live in Lake Wylie, SC just 20 minutes from Charlotte. So it will be really easy for me to come and do support groups. Lets get it going. Kathy, I think you would be great with putting this together. You always seem so organized! ;)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
