What can you eat and drink when you go out?

Recommended Posts

If you go out to a restaurant what would you usually order since you got your band?

How about in the cinema, can you eat popcorn? Does it get stuck?

What do you drink if your out? I know we can't drink alcohol or fizzy drinks so what option does that leave us?

What you can order will depend first on what stage of post op you are in. If you have gotten to the final stage where you are eating normal food, you can probably eat anything your personal band will accept. Some people have problems with bread or with Pasta or rice. I can eat them all, just VERY small amounts of them, and I must eat really slowly. Other foods I can eat more of and at a more normal eating pace.

Whether or not it is something you can eat, will just have to be done with trial and error!

chicken is always easy for me.....I eat it a lot when we go out. If we go somewhere I know I can get a tender steak, then that is always good. Things like fajitas, are great, I personally just eat them with a fork and skip the tortilla. Most restaurants have a Soup selection if you are worried about solids yet.

Mexican food is the easiest of all foods for me to eat---I have not found anything I cannot eat----but to be honest I have not tried to eat a sopapilla since being banded.

I usually have ice tea or Water with my meal----drinking it up until the time my food comes. I have had a few mixed drinks since being banded, but not a lot. Margaritas, and that type of thing are not a problem.

I do eat popcorn, both at the movies and at home----it has to be fresh----where it can be chewed up, and not just crushed, like it does when it is stale. It is not nutritious but it is one of my favorite things!!!

Eating out is not an issue! Many places will allow you to order a la carte, or some off of the childrens menu. Otherwise, plan on taking a lot home.....but it is not a big deal, I have always found something to eat!!!

Thanks for that. It was our wedding anniversary on Saturday but we are waiting another 2 weeks until I can eat to go out for a meal (I am still on liquids).

I was interested in knowing how people get on when they go out as most of my socialising is out in a restaurant or at the movies, that kind of thing. I dont go out too often though, now i have two kids, but its good to know I can still enjoy it now and again.

I have no idea yet what I can or cannot eat, I guess I will know in a few weeks time when I start trying.

Like Kat said, it really does depend on what stage you are at.

Me, I eat pretty much whatever I want. I drink spring Water, coffee, tea, sugar free ice tea (liptons has one that a lot of Aussie restaurants serve)

So I don't go without.

Happy anniversary!

You can drink alcohol in moderation too. Wine (particularly red) is actually good for you in small quantities.

I eat whatever I fancy depending on what type of restaurant it is. I can pretty much guarantee I'll always avoid the bread and garlic bread though!

I think the two keys I have found are to start really slow and eat really small bites. Think about each bite while you are eating and then after you have swollowed give it a few moments before starting the next bite. Before you know it DH will be done and your need to eat together will be over and you will probably be full. I find most of my overeating happens when I am "competing eating".

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
