cost of lap band SCoR/Dr. Benavides

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am using Dr. Benavides and having my surgery at the SCoR. Has anyone used him, with him being out of network, using UHC with an in and out of network coverage? They said I would pay as if in network and I was wondering just how much that would really be? I have met my deductible, and another, in network Dr. was going to charge me $327. I decided to go this other route because the hospital the other surgeon wanted to use was going to cost me over 3 grand. I hear the surgery center of Richardson (SCoR) is half that. Anyone who has been banded there can give me some financial ease?

Sorry I can not tell you what you will owe after your insurance pays. That really depends on your plan. But they are really good, and they keep their word to accept what insurance pays for out of network. I have not had any issues with them as far as billing. (But, I have had issues with the band.)

Do your research before you jump in. I recommend reading the revision page of obesity help.com and the section here on life after lapband. Be prepared, because even if you don't think it can happen to you... you will more than likely have some issue with the band. From pbing to erosion, there are alot of things that you need to be prepared for.

Good luck.

We have UHC at our work and he was covered with them. I didn't use him as he was too far from home but I will tell you this. He had the nerve to charge someone I knew from work through the insurance almost 73, 000.00. She had to stay over night in the hospital but also fixed a hernia. I thought that was absolutely ridiculous. Needless to say though, even with her complaining about charging so much, the only thing that worked for her wa the hernia surgery. I don't think she ever lost more than 20 lbs. I don't think that she was mentally ready. To be honest with you I haven't heard too many good things about him. I wish you luck though.

I was thinking about using Dr. Benavides because he is just a few blocks from my house. When I called the office to see what I needed to do to get an appt., the lady told me I had to have all my medical records faxed from my surgeon to him, and then he would review to see if he wanted to take me on as a patient.

SCREW that!!! I don't want my medical records being faxed. All I wanted him for was for my fills anyway.

I used Dr. R. Benavides out of Richardson I have nothing but good to say about him, he's a excellent dr. my surgery was 8-11-08 and I drove to Decatur to have my surgery. I pd out of pocket to him my co-insurance 400.00 then I pd 1200.00 to the hospital the surgery cost 27, 000, and my portion all together was 1600.00. But so far to me he's been a great dr.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
