Givin' up the ice cream

Recommended Posts

RSG - I understand feeling ashamed - remember I'm the one that ate 4 cups of chilied chickpeas in one night AFTER supper! But by your own admission you ARE doing better, and that's the key. We all just have to try to do better than the previous day or week or weekend.

Unlike you though, I could never be filled on 1 chicken strip (or part thereof). Then again, my doc is a firm believer in 1 cup or 1.5 cups of food/meal which is significantly more than many others. It works for me though - when I remember and work with the band.

You know your key issue - drinking with the meal. So, I will try to remember to periodically remind you to make sure there is no glass on the table when you are eating. I will nag from a distance!

As for hiding - I used to do that too - sneak into the kitchen after my parents were asleep and grab some bread and then head back to my bedroom to eat it. Even when I lived alone, I would still feel 'guilty' about going into the kitchen and getting food at night. Those issues took a long time to deal with, and even now in my 50's I still have recurrances.

hey rsg,

i too have been really bummed...major plateau, a partial unfill, and the cookie dough fairy...all conspired With me...i needed a refill....but i couldn't find satiety (no duh i had a partial unfill) but, even now...my head is hungry but my band is full....i still want to eat with my eyes....Some things i read that are helping me is about putting up some boundaries...you know like safety rails....one girl told me about only having Ice Cream at a speciality ice cream store....really fabulous ingredients...the best she could afford, and then only Once a week or Two...because she had that safety rail...of "in two more days i can go to cold stone or _____ and get my total fave Ice Cream, hold the guilt please"

would this help you....so far it's helping me....i guess i feel less pressure now to get the ice cream because i know it's coming in____ days....

whatever works...

blessings and patience be yours today!

amanda

ps i can't figure out how to get my darn ticker updates...the good news is that i am down 73 lbs!! 16 pounds till onderland!

Last night at support group, they talked about this being a life style change and not a diet. That does not work for me. I have to tell myself I am on a diet or otherwise I think I can have just "one" of this or that. That starts a major binge. When I look at sugar and say to myself,

"no you are on a diet" somehow that gives me more willpower.

Today I was proud of myself. I found a bag of chocolates

in one of the cupboards at work. I closed the cupboard immediately. I have been doing good this week and not eating sugar. It's best to just get it out of my system.

Guess who came to visit me again last night? Yep, Mr. Ice Cream. And it tasted not so good. Can't say it was horrible but it was blah.

Bad news - I finished it anyway even though it was only mildly edible.

Good news - sugar free pudding sounds so much better now. Yay!

Thinner - whatever works for you is obviously the plan to follow. Congrats on avoiding the chocolates...maybe someone else at work put them there so they could avoid temptation!

Ezma - Yah! So now there is no need to feel that temptation any more????

OK - I had some Peanut Butter on apple slices last night. Why oh why do nuts taste so good AND have to be a good source of Protein? ? That just gives me an excuse.

Hey Tap. How was your portion size on that Peanut Butter? If you kept that to a reasonable amount I'd say you did really well. That apple helped to bulk it up and make you feel like you were having a lot. Plus the preparation made it so much better than mindlessly chomping away at nuts and having no idea how many you were eating until the container was empty. Sounds like you did great!

I think I'm over the ice cream as long as I keep the mint chocolate chip out of the house.

Portion size??? You mean, as in how many teaspoons, more accurately tablespoons, ok maybe cups??? Does that answer the question? I have NO control - peanuts, Peanut Butter,

*Tap hangs her head in shame*

I threw the icecream away.

It was almost gone anyway so it didn't hurt.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Baby steps I guess.

Sigh.

I was at the grocery store buying chocolate (not for me) and saw a huge selection of mixed nuts. I thought of you tapshoes.

Pick your head back up and go for a walk. At least it wasn't fried peanut butter...I'm sure they could do that.

You know, I agree with you there. My Dr kept telling me your not on a diet, your not on a diet...so when I thought...I really shouldn't eat that my mind told me back "Why not? Your not on a diet."

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
