New Beginnings...

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am so excited to be joining this group. I had my surgery on 28 Aug at 8am in the morning and have already dropped 15lbs. The surgery went very well and the only complaint I had was a soreness to my shoulders and neck (nurse said it was due to the anethesia). After a couple of days it went away. I am still on the liquid diet and so far it has been good. I'm not sure how any one else has done during this phase getting enough Protein, but if you like Ensure Plus or Boost with protein, I found that by adding 1 packages of Beneprotein with the Ensure or Boost, you can more than make the daily requirement of 50-60 grams of protein. It doesn't mix real well unless you give it a good shake. To get it to mix, I used an empty Ensure containter, dumped half of a new bottle into it and mixed in the Beneprotein, I then added as much of the 2 together and gave it another sound shake. For me, there is no additional taste and has made it really easy for me to get my protein. It is so good, I've had to get on my 14yr old daughter who thinks they taste like milkshakes and her drinking them made me run out pretty fast :crying:. I plan on experimenting and seeing what additional ways I can use it in my dietary plan. I use the pre-measured packets so they can travel well and bought them on line at Walgrens.com.

Hi Queenbee - Am not banded yet but hope to have my date set when I see the surgeon on the 11th. Am so happy for your results and appreciate your recommendation regarding the Protein Drink. I have been trying a few different Protein products in preparation ....... have been using the "Bullet" (small blender) which can be purchased at Bed, Bath and Beyond. It is one of the best purchases I have ever made. It has a small profile so takes up very little room on your counter. It blends everything to perfection -- my opinion:)

Again, am very happy for your accomplishments so far on your weight-loss journey.

Hi Queenbee:

I was banded on the 27 of August, I will definately check those out hopefully they taste good

Doing well lost 20 so far since I last saw the doc, on my scale anyway. WE just bought a new scale that tells you all kinds of things, how much Water is in your body, weight, BMI, some other stuff pretty cool. (Bed Bath and Beyond about $90.00, well worth it) keep up the good work and keep in touch with your progress. Take Care, Andrea :cool2:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
