I know they mean well...

I work in the office during the day (resident manager at night) for a huge building through HUD housing where we provide low cost apartments for seniors and those with physical disabilities. I absolutely love my job and am thankful for the blessings that have come with it.

We have a lot of Ukrainian residents who bring us wonderful food that they make a couple times a week at least. Holiday time... almost every day! Today a lady brought my favorite that they make. I have no idea what it's called, but it's like a doughnut consistancy (not sweet though) and just as greasy as a doughnut. Some are stuffed with potato and some with sausage. I absolutely love the potato ones! Well, I broke down and had 1/3 of one. Not too bad, but still now that I have the taste, I want more! I haven't been banded yet and am trying to lose the required 10% body weight that insurance requires. So far, the loss is slow, but steady. I wish there was a way to turn them down on their generous offers, but I simply can't. This is all they have to give, and they love to give. They are some of the nicest people I've ever met and would hate to hurt their feelings. Plus there an the issue with the language barrier. I know they would not understand if I tried to explain to them that I'm on a diet and their wonderful food is too tempting! ugh!

I know, self control right?! I wish it were always that easy, if it were, I wouldn't be here! Anyway, just needed to vent a little to help me be more accountable and keep me from eating more. Any words of wisdom are welcome and appreciated.

Oh Honey! Coming from a culture in which it is just plain impolite to turn down food or not clean your plate, I can surely understand what you are looking at. Try this: "Thank you so very much! Is it ok if I take only half? My doctor wants me to start a very strict diet on Monday so that I can quit taking so much medicine. The medicines are soooo expensive and he says that I won't have to take them if I lose that weight."

Very small portion taken, don't eat it if you can avoid it...but a tiny portion is not a catastrophe

Blame it on the doctor

Strict Diet

Starts Monday...not today, so you don't turn them away

Lots of meds (even if not true)

Meds are expensive

This leaves them with their dignity and expresses your appreciation while preserving your efforts too. If the language barrier is greater than you can get this message through, consider going through the younger generation. If a younger person comes by the office, or meets you on the grounds, give the story almost as though you were "complaining" about your doctor.

Good Luck!

Silly Goose,

I know it is extremely hard, believe me. I have an addiction also and it is fast food. I haven't eaten french fries and burgers since 2005. Do I miss it no, but the smell of it still drives me CRAZY. When I smell ketchup I don't think of tomatoes, I think of french fries. You need to take this time while you have it and slowly walk away from your addiction. Don't rely on the band to do this for you because it won't.

All depending on the fills a person has, you are really able to eat anything and everything you allow yourself to. Wean yourself off of the stuff that put you where you are now.

You can do it, you know you can, BECAUSE YOU ARE HERE NOW!

Josephine

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?
