single mom, 1 kid, what will i cook?

Recommended Posts

hello all:

i am a single mom of a 14 yr old boy. and i am sorry to say he is already obese (270 lbs) -- i can't believe i did this to us!

anyway, i'm going in on the 25th of sept for a consultation and hoping i can get banded.

my question is, how am i going to be motivated to cook for him if and wihen i'm on a liquid diet and not able to eat much at all? i hear so many people say they are hungry, won't cooking for him just add to the torture?

all this came about due to serious back problems/pain. but i have made up mind - once i am able to walk, we will be walking on the beach everyday. and i am already getting somewhat healthier with the grocery shopping. its very overwhelming.

oh and one more question...... have any of you started roller blading for exercise? that sounds sooooo fun! way better then walking!

thanks so much for the advise!

Hi Susan:

I can't answer to your question re cooking. I hardly ever do!

I can respond to your question on rollerblading. Take a look at trikking. WWW.trikke.com I bought my new one at trikketampa. I am loving it, and it's so much fun that I forget that I'm exercising. It works muscles that I never knew that I had, but now I can actually feel them under my blubber!

Good luck with the banding. As far as eating the right stuff goes, it takes alot of planning to eat the right things at the right time, but once you get into a routine you'll be fine.

Best wishes to you.

Take care.

Sue

I, too, am a single mom (12 yr old boy) - AND I too have a Trikke!!!!! Personally, I would wait a LONG time before roller blading - try simpler forms of exercise like walking, biking, and swimming!

Yes - it can be a pain to cook for one - but you can do it!!! It's just for a while! I started working out with a trainer for a few weeks this summer, just to give me a kick start - and now I attend the fitness/boot camp at my church 3 nights a week! Great fun!

Crockpots are great - and I have a new toy - I fell victim to an infomercial and bought some time of counter top convection oven thing that will let me cook food directly from frozen in a short period of time! We'll see how that goes! :-) Just go for trial and error! Plan ahead and JOURNAL your food!!!! Good Luck! JoAnne in Texas

thanks guys!

those trikkes look like soooo much fun and WAY safer then roller blades. but i see they only hold up to 250 lbs, i am at 350. i guess i could drop the first 50 by walking and liquid diets then be ok at 300??

i really want to get one with my income tax check next year! but with my son - i will have to get 2!

do you guys know - the tires with or without air ( does it make a difference?)

Hi:

I have a trikke with air tires now. I started with a knock off trikke with polyurethane tires. The polyurethane is supposed to be easier to learn on. However, I'll probably never ride on them again. The air tires are so much smoother. With the poly tires you can feel every bump and crack in the road. With the air tires it's smooth sailing.

You can try going on the website www.trikketalk.com and see if there's anybody nearby that has one for you to try before buying. The people there are quite friendly and maybe somebody has one of each for you to try before you buy.

Best wishes to you.

Sue

They are pricey - I bought one and when my son comes with me - we just take turns - alternating walking and riding. Also, I purchased mine at 250 lbs, but I did not have very much upper body strength, so I wasn't able to do very much - but now that I have lost more - AND have been lifting weights, it is much more enjoyable. It has been too hot down here to ride lately (Texas) - but I plan to really get out there and ride when it starts cooling down.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
