Unable to burp or belch

Recommended Posts

This is really strange . . . but ever since I was banded on 7/16/08 I have not been able to burp or belch

I can feel the bloating but the gas will not come up. Although it is not painful it is uncomfortable. I just want to burp again.

I asked my doctor about this when I had my first fill and she really didn't seem to have an answer for me.

Any suggestions?

And I have the opposite problem. I burp all the time. I don't know if it will help you but I burp if I bend over, while sitting down. I use the gasx strips but I really don't see a difference. Good luck hope you feel better.

i know EXACTLY how you feel-i had the same problem when i had mine done. it was very uncomfortable for me and i had a lot of pressure in my chest. it took weeks before i could burp, but when i was finally able to, i cant stop. i burp ALL the time now, i didnt used to do that! just hang in there, itll come...also i think the positioning of the band has a lot to do with it-mine was placed high on my stomach, almost esaphagus. i think its more restricting there.....

When my band is tighter I cannot burp, either. It took some getting use to but I got use to it I guess. I have to be careful of not sallowing a bunch of air when my band is tighter or I feel uncomfortable pressure in my chest that just has to go away on it's own, without a burp. I avoid soda because it will hurt and come back up anyway.

My MIL recently had the surgery and her Dr. told her to avoid chewing gum and drinking with straws to avoid trapping air in.

Some people can burp and it's not an issue, some cannot. Different bodies react differently to restriction.

I will say it is much less of a problem for me at nearly 2 years post-op.

I have the same issue. It feels like there is a little bubble in my esophagus, not painful... just kind of weird feeling.

Me too...three months later and still can't burp and at this point feel like I probably never will again. I hiccup a lot though. But my surgeon seemed to think it was related to my hernia repair, I did look it up and found that some people who have hiatal hernia repair do lose their ability to belch. Who knows, maybe the lap band has a similar affect. I am used to it now.

Jodi,

I have the exact same issue since my band was tighten.I use to be able to burp so loud my husband would say I could shake the walls. Now my kids keep trying to challenge me and I can't do it.I usually hiccup once after I eat a meal. Then I know I'm full.

I am the QUEEN of belching. But only when I'm not too tight. Before my slight unfil I couldn't belch when I desperately wanted to. Then I got the unfill and now.. wow.. I went walking with my friend the other day 30 minutes after we ate and I was belching non stop.. HUGE and loud.. and I just kept apologizing. Well, she has the band too and she was like, "oh, I would give anything to belch like that".. but, she had just gotten a fill and couldn't. So, you do miss it when it's gone.

Yeah, same here-my hiccups are always followed by the announcement "Ok, I'm full". But my inability to burp started immediately after surgery (before any fils). Mine are very deep hard hiccups, much harder than pre-band...how about yours?

I rarely burp. Theres times I cannot burp and I feel the pressure of it wanting to come up but it wont. I have just kinda gotten used to it. After a while a few small burps will come out like it had to break up into smaller bubbles I don't know lol.

I asked the doctor he said he hadn't heard of it.

Hey, I was banded on September 2, 2008 (a couple of days ago) and I am experiencing not being able to burp although I feel the burp is there. I want to burp as I feel it is a normal function of our bodies. Has anyone had this issue shortly after being banded and if and when did it pass and you began burping again? :tt2:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
