Glucerna Shakes????

Recommended Posts

My doctor has suggested I drink 6 Glucerna shakes a day for 2 weeks for my pre-op diet. They have more sugar than the low carb SlimFast and the Atkins Advantage shakes and less Protein. Has anyone ever tasted these? Thanks in advance for any responses.

I am starting to think the dr.'s make money off of these shakes. Mine said I had to have a specific shake, which of course he sold in his office. I have been on the shake diet now since last Sunday, and today, 6 days away from surgery, I had a piece of chicken breast. it was small, about 3 ounces and that was all. I was feeling weak today and thought I would puke if I had another shake. I do not intend on doing that again but after 8 days of shakes only, I really needed something with substance, especially if I am not able to stomach another shake.

Try mixing your shakes in the blender with ice add some frozen fruit. It makes a huge differance. The shakes get old and made me want to vomit from the taste. Also try SF flavors like strawberry or coffee whatever you like. Be creative with your drinks. Best of luck to you

I'm using the Atkins Advantage (the only "OTC" shake my doctor allows) and they're not too bad. I mix them with ice and a spoonful of sf/ff pudding mix. The pudding mix really hides the protien flavor!! and the ice bulks it up and makes it more milkshake like.

I can only assume that my surgeon owns stock in glucerna because he refuses to let me use anything else. At $10 per six pack, they had better be darn good. That's $140 just for my pre-op diet. I had better lose lot of weight.

Glucerna is specifically for Diabetics. We give it to our patients as tube feeding too. It has the balanced amount of carbs and nutrients. Don't disregard what your surgeon is suggesting just because you may think he owns stock the company. It is recommended by many nutritionists.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
