You will be fine. Just look on this site for answers to your questions (always defer to your doc, of course). I made it through the first few weeks with by reading about others experiences.

My surgery went like this: Go in 8:00 am, into surgery at 9:00, waking up 10:30 and out by 11:00. Very easy. Just take it easy untill your body tells you it is time to get moving. Follow doc's eating orders and smile, for you will be eating like a "normal" person soon.

Good luck

Take a few deep breaths and you will do fine :) I had to fly out of province and I just thought in baby steps, like this: first I'll just get on this plane, then focus on getting unpacked at the hotel, then arrange my transportation to the clinic, next just think about changing into the gown, and tell yourself this will be over in a flash. Before I knew it I was waking up and heading back to my hotel. Everything went better than I expected and I was up and walking within a couple hours of getting back to my room. Just listen to your body and do what you feel is right. I was told to focus on rest the first day, which I did, but a few times I knew I HAD to get up and walk. Mind you it was a brief 5 minutes around the hotel lobby then back to my room for a nap, but it really helped to get the burps up and things moving, which made for sleeping much better. Time really does fly and before you know it everything will be over and you'll be on the road to recovery and begining a wonderful new way of living! Good luck

Good luck to you too. I'm scared I still may want to eat too much and that this won't help. I know it's just the jitters and second guessing, but it's hard when you've been battling so long and nothing's worked yet. Thanks for the response!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
