Undecided about a fill....

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on July 30th. Currently I have lost 20.5lbs had no pre-op diet. What I did have was complications after surgery.. First complication was dehydration and being stuck, which landed me 2 1/2 days in hospital, 2nd complication was a (what dr's believe) diverticulitis attack, landed me in the hospital for 5 days.

Now I keep telling myself that I can do this for a few months without a fill. Because I want myself to heal... I am scared of further complications, Not sure what to do:confused:

Just to help you lay it out...why would getting your first fill stop you from healing? Usually the first fill doesn't do much anyway. What does your surgeon say?

Are you still losing weight?

At this point I am losing weight. I am not due for a couple weeks but I just scared I guess.. I don't want to end up back in the hospital, I have to have more test ran and for now I am not comfortable with my surgeon any longer. I am meeting with the Surgeon that came to my rescue both times next week to get established but for now I am really watching what I eat and making sure that its "mostly" healthy.

My husband is concerned for me also... The second hospital trip was quite scary, and until I am healthy I think maybe I should just continue the careful eating choices.

If you feel you are losing weight, and not hungry, then there really isn't a need for a fill. Most people are ready around 4-6 weeks, but personally, I had my band UNFILLED for 10 months, & lost 83 pounds. The band itself felt tight enough for me to feel full after eating a little food. This past weekend I finally had my first fill. It's not real common, but for some people, the band is tight enough on the stomach to create enough restriction. Some people have actually lost all their weight completely unfilled. Listen to your body and you decide.

AND frankly if you are nervous or scared, it's best to just wait. What harm will a few weeks do? Until you are comfortable with the new surgeon and so on.

Hi,

I was banded on 7/29 in Boston and have lost 21 lbs. I cannot wait to get my first fill on sept 11th, I have absolutely no restriction and am completely starving, I have been excercising daily at the Y and just being very strict with myself, my doctor told me with the first fill is only 2cc, he can get me up to 6cc pretty quickly, so i am looking forward to that. Basically, if you dont get a fill, its like your not using the operation to its fullest potential. I dont think that your diverticulitis had anything to do with your surgery, I am not a doctor but have been hospitalized twice with that, it is one of the most painful things i have Ever experienced!!! I feel for you, usually that is from little bits of food, seeds, corn, poppys, nuts, popcorn, cuc seeds ect...gets stuck in your intestine and causes infection. I have to avoid all of the above or get a huge piece of my intestine cut out... no thanks..i am paranoid that i will get an attack again, so i am really careful.. I hope you feel better soon!! When is your fill scheduled for!!

Good luck

Kirsten

I almost didn't get my first fill. I was losing weight, but I was starting to get really hungry every 3 hours instead of 4. I went, but I told her I didn't want the normal 3-4ccs they put in. She started with 2cc and I had too much restriction with drinking Water, so she pulled 1cc out. I am fine with this small amount.

Bottom line: if you are losing weight and aren't starving, I would probably wait for the fill. You only need the fill when you aren't satisfied any longer and are starving constantly. I understand you are apprehensive, I know I would be too. Give it some time, but please make sure that when you get to the point that you need a fill, you will go. I think you are probably really careful now with what you eat and your chewing. You will do fine.

Listen to your body. It knows what you need.:tt2:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
