Sept. Samurai Surgery Check-in

Recommended Posts

Every since my surgery (9/16) I've noticed a little lump or something about the size of an egg. It almost feels like a muscle or something. When I'm laying down it's right on the lower ribcage but when I stand up it falls right below the ribs.

I have a lump like that. I found out last week that my lump is my port. I wasn't expecting my port to be so high up.

Ambraberger,

I don't know what that left side thing is but let me know if you find out. Every since my surgery (9/16) I've noticed a little lump or something about the size of an egg. It almost feels like a muscle or something. When I'm laying down it's right on the lower ribcage but when I stand up it falls right below the ribs. It's just sore and yesterday I must have slept on it or something because my ribs on the left side were really sore when I woke of yesterday. I don't know if it's the same thing or not.

Niecey

Welcome to the wonderful world of our ports. I guess everyone talked so much about the band that we skipped over the port. For me it is on my left under my breast just under where my rib stops. It is also the largest incision and if I play with it I can almost make out some of the outline. It's really not that large, the area is just swollen. I was told it will be tender, they attach it to the muscle.

For me I notice it is very sore after sitting at my desk all day, bending and stretching over my work space. I am adjusting my work space so that I don't have to reach as much. I also noticed that sitting on the couch and reaching for the floor was "not nice" either.

As sore as it might be, and it does get better each day, I am glad it is there. This is the little device that is going to give my Dr access for my fill. I'll take a sore port any time. And in a few more weeks we won't even know it is there.

Hey, we are almost there. A couple fills to tweak our bands and we will be on our way to a Healthy New Us! Debbie

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. I am still in the hospital an d looks like I will be here for a few days . I am being treated for Mrsa. There is a chance I could lose my band if it does not resolve. This was a fear of mine but since I am an icu nurse I had a risk of infection. I am feeling better and hanging in there.

I am so sorry that you are having a hard time... and I was also wondering... is it strange or stressful to be stuck where you work? You are an icu nurse, and are staying at the hospital you work in? I'm crazy.. I think about things like that! I really hope you don't loose your band and that you start feeling better ASAP! We are all praying for you JWRN! Much love! :tt2:

JWRN, I hope that things start to look up for you. MRSA is a nasty little bugger. I am a PTA and I was also worried about MRSA...one of those things where you know too much. Good luck and many thoughts and prayers sent your way.

I am so sorry to hear your news JWRN. I hope the doctors are able to get the MRSA under control quickly and that you're sent home healthy and with your band. ~Sending prayers your way.

On a side note: One of the self-pay patients in my group was going for GBS. She jokingly said that she was planning to stay in the hospital all four days she was paying for. The nurse said that, in all honesty, you want to go home as soon as you're physically able, because most infections are spread in the hospital, let alone that most people rest more comfortably at home.

Oh no. keep us posted! Is there anything else you can try if you lose your band?

I almost missed the Sept. Samurai group. I had surgery on Sept. 29th. Things went very well, I just get tired out so quickly. I've just found this site today and have enjoyed reading the post. I wish everyone well. I've lost 5 lbs pre op and 15 lbs post op. But I am ready to chew something.:tt2:

Just checking in. I'm a little concerned. I had talked to someone at my surgeons office on friday and she told me to step up the diet to soft foods. So I did. I was confused cuz all the paper work I had said full liquids days 3-14.. I was banded 9/29 and I'm on day 7 now. So I started CAREFULLY on soft foods on day 5????? That's what she told me to do because I was feeling very weak/puny. I haven't had any different pain, just the same stuff that is healing, I hope I haven't done something bad. Worried.

JWRN~I'm so concerned for you. I'm a NICU nurse and know how that can go. I hope they get it taken care of for you. How are you feeling?

I think that as long as you are going what your surgeon's office said to do, you are ok. I know one of the books that I read about WLS, their post op diet started soft foods on day 7. I think especially since you were feeling so bad, that they just moved you up a litte.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
