Sept. Samurai Surgery Check-in

Recommended Posts

Just checking in, 1 week out of surgery and I am fine, got the diet thing worked out getting in enough calories and Protein a day to sustain myself ok. Through experimenting with the amount of Protein I get I have got myself to a level where I don't feel hungry like I did a few days ago.

To people who are having a hard time with this My friend Kate who has been banded for 10 and a half years says its the best thing she ever did for her health and says we all should be proud of ourselves for taking the big step to a better life even though sometimes it is difficult.

Good wishes to up and coming Samuarais. Thinking of you all!

Well I am now banded. Went in yesterday at 11 for a 1 P.M. surgery and with emergencies and hard cases I did not get into surgery until 8 P.M. I almost left. I had a conversation with my family physician around 7:45. I was in tears. She listened and said i had waited that long - why leave now. She prayed for me and they came to get me. My surgery went well, he even repaired a small hiatal hernia. Iwas awake by 11 but had to wait for a room. I ended up spending the night. My back hurt from those beds, but when I got to a room I was fine. I was wide awake so they gave some benadryl, I got about 4 hours. I was up pottying in the night with no trouble. I have been very fortunate - pain is minimal and gas pains mostly hurting my left shoulder. I have Vicoden and Motrin for pain. I have been doing the fuids not because I am hungry, but my mouth is so dry. sugar free popsicles are my favorite. I have had broth, Jello and Water. Gas is passing out the right end. Went to the store on the way home for popsicles and did a couple things around the house. I did start hurting so I laid down this afternoon. I love the no hunger feeling. I can hardly wait now for the rest of my new life. So be brave September friends - this is a good thing we are doing!:)

Anyone else banded on the 9th and how are you feeling?

__________________

I was banded on the 9th. I'm feeling pretty good. It hurts to get up and down and I'm trying very hard to relax but I notice when I don't do much the gas builds up and hurts, So basically it's off and on with the gas but I'm absolutely not eating enough. All I had today was Water (which I need to gulp but can't) 1/2 of the cream of wheat that the instant package holds. 1/2 a yogurt, 1/2 Protein Shake (nasty) and that's it. Were you also banded on the 9th and how are you doing with it?

I am home now and banded. I am soooo sore. I have no pain and no gas. Just sore as heck. Wearing a band around my waist and still in my pajamas from this morning. I am drinking the 42g bullet along with broth. All in all I survived and just looking forward to healing.

Hi everyone, just wanted to let ya'll know how it went yesterday....I'll kind of give you a quick run down.

Well I had to be at the hospital at 5:15. Once I got there they took me right on back to Same Day Services. They gave me a gown to change into and the nurse came back and looked back through my info, asked about meds, bowel prep, food, etc. After a little while she gave me a blood thinner shot in my stomach, it didn't hurt. After a few minutes I went to the restroom and then they came to get me to go back to the holding area. My family got to go to the waiting area. In the holding area they got my IV started, checked my vitial signs, and I had to sign some release papers. After that I was ready to go to the operating room. They gave me something to start relaxing me before we left the holding area so by the time I got to the OR I was mostly asleep. Next thing I remember was waking up in the recovery area. I was in and out of it for about an hour. I had some pain but the nurse gave me some morphine and it did the trick. Before I went back to Same Day Services she took out my catheter, which I didn't even know I had in so I guess they did that after I went to sleep, thank God. Once back in SDS I got to see my family and rest for a little while until the anesthesia wore off. They had me get up and go to the restroom and I had to sip some Water. I also got up and walked around for a good while trying to help some of the gas pain I was having. After I was able to drink about 12 oz of water they were able to let me go home, which was about 2:00. Once at home I had to force myself to drink b/c of the gas pain. I did try and walk as much as possible around the house to help that and also took a gas x thin strip. I'm having a little pain but mostly pressure in my upper abdomen. I had a little sholder pain in bed this morning(yes I was able to sleep in bed, thank God) but I don't feel it any more. Well I think that is everything, If you have any questions feel free to ask. Thank you all for the good wishes! I hope everyone elses' surgeries go as smoothly as mine!

I was banded on the 9th. Finally today I got to eat cream of wheat. I have only be able to eat sugar free Jello, and broth per the doctor:eek: I am still sore but the gas has not been that bad. I am trying to get off the pain meds becasue I feel this makes me real tired and weak. Havent been able to lay flat down yet this hurts too much to get back up. Cant wait to sleep in a bed again. Everyday I feel a litte bit better cant wait to be fully recovered. Good luck to all you September banders

Hello all-

I am being banded 9/18/08. Today is my second day on the liquids. The brain hunger is getting to me a bit. I hope I will not totally freak out at some point. I am getting really nervous.

ttyson, it seems like the second day is the worse for a lot of people. Hopefully, tomorrow you'll feel better, and if nothing else, you'll be another day closer.

ok i was banded in Mexico on 9/8 and i must admit, i am thinkin about food alot...i have to get the Protein thing down right...i'm still subsisting on chix broth, a little juice, and sugar free popisicles..on surgery date i weighed in at 276 and now i am 271..is that good? for some reason i thought it would be more..the pain and stiffness is pretty much gone..oh yeah i havent had any of the shoulder pain that many others have had..in fact the doctors were amazed..apparently i looked pretty good for someone who just had surgery..after surgery i did have a mishap..i was feeling nausea and the nurse gave me a pill that was supposed to dissolve under my tongue well the pill which had a kind of pepperminty taste made me even more nauseaus and i started wretching but of course i had nothin to throw up and i started panicking b/c i thought i was gonna go move the band or something, so all the doctors rushed in and saw was what was happening and immediately gave me a pain and nausea injection and i felt better..oh yeah the gurgling goin on is a bit weird, i hope that leaves cuz my dogs who sleep with me kept barking b/c they kept hearing the sounds in my stomach...lol

oh yeah 1 day after surgery i weighed myself on the scale in the hall of the hospital and it said 279 but everyone told me not to worry..that included the extra gas...so i guess officially i lost 8lbs..i gotta try and not be obsessed with the scale now..

when me and my mom got back from Mexico, my dad had bought us a scrumptious looking sheetcake and ice cream..:? i told him to freeze my piece of cake

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
