Aetna question-2yr BMI requirement

Recommended Posts

Aetna's requirement is that you have a bmi of 40 for at least 2yrs. Does anyone know what Aetna consider 2yrs? Do they consider the current year as a part of the 2yrs? Or are they looking at the past 2yrs such as 2006 and 2007? I just want to know if I consider having the approval/surgery in 2009 are they going to look for my bmi requirement in the years 2008 and 2009 or 2007/2008.

I wouldn't guess. I would call them and ASK! If they want 24 months up to today, give them it. Manipulate the data to give them exactly whatever they request.

I was just denied by Aetna because my Dr . Did not Submit my weights for 2006.. They submited 2003,2004,2005, 2007 and 2008 but 2006 was missing. But because there requirments are for 2 yrs the denial letter told me I needed 2006 to prove i was overweight. When I called the rep I asked her if they thought i got skinny for 1 yr. Anyways 2006 through 2008 would be what they require, If you plan on getting the surgery next Yr I would probably send them 2006-2009 then you know you are not missing anything

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
