Froggie have you tried eating the same amount but spread out in like one extra meal a day. Thats what kicked my metabolism up. Staying with the 1200 calorie diet but eating just a little less, each time and adding one more meal to my day. Just an idea. With exercise you could be turning fat into muscle which weighs more, couldn't you? U'm by no means an expert or I wouldn't be on this board I hope. Although a year ago I did have a dietician who was as heavy as I was, it was impossible to take her seriously when she was telling me what was what.

I know what you mean on the insurance, I've already gotten differant responses on the requirements. I never asked about bmi or which weight they went by, since it was my last weigh in that this came up at. I almost dread calling my insurance again. I feel like they are taking notes while we speak. Can you tell I'm feeling a bit paranoid.

Froggi- I know that you will lose on the 2 week diet. I don't have any shadow of a doubt at all. It is so low carb that it throws you into ketosis and the weight comes off. When I did it, it made me pretty tired so I didn't really exercise and still lost the 15 lbs. I drank 2 Slim Fast low carb shakes, which are 190 calories a piece, ate a small chicken breast and some veggies for dinner (~300 calories) and one string cheese for a snack (80 calories). So, I was having roughly 800 calories a day for 2 weeks! You will lose on that.

Saundra- I know exactly what you mean about insurance. They covered my EGD but would not cover my husbands! I was too paranoid to call and complain to them because I was afraid that they would want the money back from covering mine!!!

I was wondering ...how long until I can drive? Lift? (granddaughter) etc. Getting anxious....surgery tomorrow!! I hope they call and change my surgery time, its scheduled for 5pm, I have to be there at 3....but nothing to eat/drink from midnight tonight....so lets hope surgery calls today and moves it up earlier in the day....

Good luck! That late of a surgery time will make a long day for you! My surgery was at 2pm and I didn't get to the floor until 9pm. Well, it won't be so long for you because you'll be out of it, but it will be long for your family. :) Tell them to bring something to do. The cafe is right beside the surgery waiting area, so at least they can eat dinner there. It was about 1 week before I drove. As long as you're on the Percocet and Phenergan, do not drive. They made me like a zombie. But, once I was off those, I started driving again. I'm not sure on the lifting. Ask him about that. Your follow up appointment will be 2 weeks after surgery and he'll probably say it's ok then. Again, good luck to you!!!

Where can I get those slim fast low carb shakes and how much are they...or is there any Protein Powder that will work about the same and be low carb too. I don't want to pay a ton of money buying 2 weeks worth of stuff for my preop lol.

The cheapest place I have found them is at Sam's club. There are I think 15 in a case for less than $20. They only have chocolate at Sam's. Walmart has both chocolate and vanilla but they are more expensive there. These taste better than the Atkins shakes and have more protein (20g) a can. But, if you want, I have almost an entire container of Vanilla whey protein that I bought at Walmart that I will give you. I don't really like the vanilla, so it's just sitting here. I think I paid almost $20 for it, but you can have it. If you're interested, it has in 1 scoop 110 calories, 2g fat, 2g carbs and 26g of protein. 1 scoop makes 8 oz. I used the chocolate flavored after surgery to add to pudding and milk. You can add it to any liquid, too.

I don't have a sam's membership lol it sucks. I would like to have the vanilla protein powder you have...how would you get it to me though. Also how is it's nutritional info compared to the shakes you drank. I want to be sure I will lose my 5 lbs or MORE on the preop when I start it in a few weeks.

I could meet you somewhere in Vienna this week if you want. I'm just over in Belpre. It's pretty close to the Atkins shakes. If you mix it with Water, it actually has less carbs. It also has more protein than the Slim fast stuff. I don't know how it would taste that way as I haven't tried it. But, I had the chocolate protein powder in the same brand and it tasted ok in water. The way I made the shakes was in a magic bullet with ice. They were kinda like a milkshake. Just let me know where you want to meet. Or, I could drop it off at Jeannie's office if you prefer, but I don't have an appointment there till the end of October. Let me know.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
