Hello, I'm Guene I'm new here

 Hello, I'm new here, I'll be having my lapband on Sept. 15th, I'm getting a little nervous and scared. I've been over weight all my life, I've tried everything, but now my health is not so good, and I need to do something to help.

I would love to have any information on what to do or how to handle the pre-surgical diet, the do's and don'ts. Any Tips would be nice too. Thank you Bobbie (that's my real name):wink2:

Hi and congrats on making this decision. I was just banded this last monday and i too was nervous and scared. I have also be overweight all my life becoming morbidly obese at a very young age. What really worked for me was making a list of goals and things that i wanted to in my life that was exciting for me. It helped me to know that even though it is going to change my whole life ( which is was scared me the most) it was changing it for the better!!!

Good luck and please feel free to contact me

I'm day 2 post op (WOW i have a lap band yay!) and am going into what's affectionately called "bandster hell"...that period where we can only have Clear liquids. Mine will last 2 weeks. I'm just hoping to grit my teeth and get through it which isn't much of a tip! LOL

I "cheated" by doing my own preop diet instead of the one the surgeon gave me and although I lost 15 pounds in that 3 weeks, it didn't shrink my liver and on 8/11 he could not place the band. (he could've opened me up but I am so thankful he didn't!) So 2 1/2 weeks of his diet, (not mine this time) and another 17 pounds and my liver was down enought for him to do the surgery. So I guess my advice is

do what your surgeon says. You'll find lots of conflicting pre op diets, post op diets, when you can have mushie foods, when you can have solids, if you can chew gum or use straws or not...

do what your surgeon tells you. He knows what works for his practice and style of surgery.

That said, this board has tons of info that's useful, just don't go against your docs orders...especially here at the start and until you're banded and healed well!

Good luck to you and wish me luck..13 more days till i get mushie food!

Hi Bobbie,

Just be sure to follow the pre-op diet just as your doctor recommends....you don't want him or her to go in on the day of your surgery and find that your liver is too enlarged (that's the purpose of the pre-op diet, to shrink the liver). You've come this far, made up your mind to do this, so just let that be your mantra as you go through those difficult days of not eating food. Just know it won;t last forever. Before you know it, you'll be done with your surgery, eating regular food, losing weight, and feeling great! Good luck to you!

Lisa

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
