Drinking from a straw...

Recommended Posts

I guess I'm just too old fashioned LOL but I would rather pass on the straw and not do all the burping. I was taught it was rude to burp in public and I can't overcome that!

Funny after I had this surgery my burps are more like lil airy burps, I can't get a man burp out at all!!!

Hey, how are ya feelin? I'm assuming all went well for you. Give us an update. What kinda stuff are you drinking?

I was told no straws because of the air issues. I have gum disease and have always used a straw (keeps cold away from my trouble spots) but for now am going strawless. When you use a straw you swallow, each time, the liquid in the straw AND THE AIR in it too.

I figured while I'm healing I should really watch it closely and comply, but once I'm healed and going along well, I'll try and see how I personally do with it. For now, anything that cuts down on gas (I'm one day post op) is what I want to do.

Right now (day 2 post op) I've had Water, some diet green tea with artificial sweetener, some chicken broth, and yesterday I also had some beef broth.< /p>

I am stiffer today (makes sense) but I slept good...I can drink several swallows at a time but only do that when I forget myself...afraid i'll hurt something LOL

I am hungry, too. It's going to be a long long time to mushies!

My doc won't even let us have Protein shakes until week 2!

I go for the first follow up on weds though and if I'm doing well maybe he'll let me have Protein Shakes before friday!

I feel ok; not really back to normal yet but honestly, I've felt worse and more out of it when I had bronchitis. I haven't taken any pain meds except tylenol. As long as I remember to get up and move around I feel better!

It's not bad. I've been through worse. I'd take this over a corporate meeting, for example! LOL

And I am so happy to have the band. I can finally imagine a life not enslaved to food, the scale, the next diet....

When I went in for my first fill they gave me a cup of Water with a straw.....I could use one...

I won't use it for the next fill though, I burped and she put in less fill ..... I didn't have any restriction.

Hi Neenz! I just woke up after almost 8 hours of sleep....pretty good considering I sleep on my left side and stomach (owie!) not my back and right side (where there are no surgical sites) I'm able to breath deeply without as much pain, and not as stiff and "gluey" feeling (if that makes sense) as yesterday. I feel pretty good and very happy to have the band! I have to do some nursing school homework today and that's a drag, but I feel up to it at least! How are you?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
