Drinking from a straw...

Recommended Posts

I know that drinking from a straw is a big 'no no', but I have caught myself a couple of times doing it before I realized. I felt nothing different than drinking just from a glass.

Does anyone drink from a straw on a regular basis and does it bother you?

My doc didn't restrict straws from me. They gave them to me in the hospital....

My doctor said just to avoid using a straw for the first couple of days after surgery, as it may increase gas. If it's not bothering you, use a straw if you want.

I have a cup that I use for work that had a built in straw. I always use it. You just need to pay attention to your stomach and make sure you burp enough so you don't get an air bubble. My doctor never said I couldn't use one either. He told me I shouldn't chew gum because of that reason.

Ok thanks for all the replies. It never bother me to use a straw when I did. I have found that if I sit up really straight I can burp the air from my stomach so that makes me feel better.

I asked my doc about this after reading no straw use on here. I was really annoyed because I hate not using a straw. He personally didn't care, so I use one all the time and no issues.

I was told no straws because of the air issues. I have gum disease and have always used a straw (keeps cold away from my trouble spots) but for now am going strawless. When you use a straw you swallow, each time, the liquid in the straw AND THE AIR in it too.

I figured while I'm healing I should really watch it closely and comply, but once I'm healed and going along well, I'll try and see how I personally do with it. For now, anything that cuts down on gas (I'm one day post op) is what I want to do.

It has never given me a problem and I was never advised against it. I also chew gu as well, but I am really careful with it.

I know that today, 1 day post op, I can drink easily (no sipping) and don't have to burp, etc. no pain. And I'm not using any straws. So I think since my surgeon said no I'll just keep it this way. I do swallow air when I use straws (I know because I'm a big straw user) so since I feel good now, don't want to upset that apple cart.

I used a straw or a plastic juice box after surgery. They kept me from guzzling my liquids. I didn't notice an abundance of gas.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
