Anyone from Ohio?

Recommended Posts

This is kind of off topic but I have family that might move to Ohio and I had a couple of questions. I also didn't know where to post this so if I did it in the wrong place I apologize. Thank to everyone who replied to my post about how much liquid they were able to consume after surgery!

I am from the Cleveland area. I like it here (except for the winters . . . blahhh).

Just let me know if you have any questions about Ohio. :0)

My family is from Argentina and might be relocating for their job with Dannon. They would probably move to the Minster area. My aunt speaks english fluently but my uncle does not. They are also worried because their youngest child has down's syndrome and they don't know what the school system will be like. My aunt and Uncle lived in the US for five years before they had kids and went back to Argentina. But at the time they were in a very urban setting and had us close by. Now they will be in Ohio and we will be in New Jersey. Do you think that most people would be welcoming or more closed off when they find out they are foreigners? Are you familiar at all with Minster? I really appreciate you taking the time to talk to me.

I am not familiar with Minster. If the area is ethnically diverse or is a little larger town/city area, it may not be too difficult to blend in. The school systems here are accomodating for children with special needs. My nephew goes to a special school and it has been a good experience for him.

Your aunt will have a much easier time than your uncle if he doesn't speak English. If there are many speakers of their native language nearby it will be easier. However, there are many, many free ESL (English as a Second Language) classes that are available throughout the state and he can learn.

Some people are very accomodating and friendly with people from other countries, and some are not. I think you will find that anywhere within the country. It seems like it is easier here than places like Texas or California to find friendly people if you are from another country. Most people in Ohio are friendly, at least that I have met or in my area.

Discrimination can happen to anyone, at least on a small scale just about anywhere. I experienced an issue myself when I was with some friends that were speaking Turkish. I am an American and have been for many generations, have red hair and blue eyes . . . yet I had some man come up to me and ask, don't you people even speak English in a not so nice way. He then asked if we were Muslims, I ignored him and someone else told him it was none of his business. He walked away, but you could tell by the way he looked at us and asked the question he was looking for trouble. That happened in New York. It was nothing big but I will always remember it as the first experience I had with someone being upset because I was not speaking English. Some people are very strange.

Really, I think they will be OK. They have lived here before so they have an idea of what life is like here. New Jersey has a slightly more diverse culture than Ohio, but they are relatively close and things are not so different. The schools are decent and there are many good people here.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
