Any Adventurous LapBanders? Re: Scuba

Recommended Posts

Well, after losing almost 60 pounds, I've decided to try for my Scuba Certification. I'm curious to any side effects or precautions that any bandsters have experienced due to diving. Just a precaution before I take the plunge!

Not banded yet but i had the same concerns as i'm a dive master. The band is not suppose to be affected at all by diving. I think there are some posts in the exercise section or if you do a search for scuba diving you'll find some of info. Good luck!

The band isn't affected by diving. Think about it. They have to make it safe for flying! So it has to be safe for diving. In fact is rated for well over 100ft. I've had mine since April and I've been diving on it. No problems. There's no air in the band, so there's nothing to expand/contract.

I went diving in June (2 months after my surgery) and I did not have any problems. Although I am just a novice, there was no discomfort anywhere when I dove. Good luck!!

I'm starting my scuba certification courses this week. Just figured I would check in on this thread and make sure no one has had any problems... :) So excited! I've always wanted to get certified but was always scared there wouldn't be a wetsuit big enough for me.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
