My husband is the one that is getting the band done. I am the one that does all the asking and so forth. He is going this Saturday, Aug. 30 for his first psych visit. The dr said that it will take about 2 hours for his test then he will come back for an interview. What should we expect in regards to the test? Any help?

The test I took was the fill in the dot questions, a bunch of yes/no questions like: "I love my mother, I have stolen before, I want to be I fireman, I like to torture small animals, I am a supermodel."

I was asked to take my time and answer the questions honestly and apparently they can tell if you were dishonest.

The second visit she went over the results and based only on this test was able to give a pretty accurate decription of my personality. It is supposed to help them to determine your personality type, weaknesses, and mental health to determine if you are a good candidate for the band.

After reviewing the test, she verbally quizzed me on my knowledge of the surgery and how the band works to make sure I fully understood what I was getting into. We discussed my eating habits, my goals, my concerns etc. She gave me a really nice diary to keep track of my food and some brochures on stress and eating, types of foods to eat etc. She had me sign a promisary statement that if at any time after surgery, my surgeon feels that I need counseling to deal with my weight loss that I will seek it. The second visit took about an hour.

The eval is a tool to check for any destructive eating behaviors and to make sure that your husband can handle the lifestyle changes. It shouldnt be bad. just answer honestly and he sould be fine.

I did my psych eval last week and the therapist and I hit it off, he spent a lot of time chatting with me about the ins and outs of the test. Yes, it is mostly about making sure that your husband is a good candidate. The questions are some to do with food "When I am sad, I reach for a snack" kinda questions, some are personality "I believe strongly in a higher power", and some are questions to see if you are paying attention "I was on the cover of 3 or more magazines in the last month." Its not bad, just make sure he takes his time and pays attention. My dr said that if people fail on the ones that monitor if you are really reading the question (like the magazine one above) they will often caution against surgery because the person either isnt taking it seriously enough or they can not be bothered to read/follow directions.

My psych eval was about 10 minutes long. I couldn't believe it. He asked me things like "have you ever hallucinated or had delusions?" I don't know if it was like this because I'm a psych nurse, or they are all like that at this place.

Maybe it was because I emailed the vice president of surgery in the corporation and let him know that I had been getting the run around from the bariatric center for 3 months, so they had already made up their mind ahead of time.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
