Hi everyone!

I'm new here. I just stumbled across this site while Googling to find out if Tricare covers the Lap Band. I am just trying to find information and then maybe see if I will be covered for it. I don't think I will but I am interested in it.

My name is Nikki and I'm almost 21 years old. I live in Okinawa, Japan with my husband who is in the Air Force. I've been overweight my entire life and really want to lose weight so I can live a healthier life and so that we can start our family.

Have a great day!

Yes tricare covers it subject to conditions. I'm not sure exactly what they are; but if you're active duty, wouldn't you go to a base hospital?

I'm tricare standard and weigh enough that comorbidities etc weren't an option. They submitted my packet and 2 days later it was approved.

My husband is AD and I'm on Tricare Prime. We are overseas so if I were to be approved, I would be sent to Hawaii for the surgery.

I don't have any health problems besides my weight.

I'm almost 21 and I'm 5'5" (maybe 5'4") and 240-245lbs. I read that the Tricare requires you to be 100lbs overweight (which I am) and have a health condition (which I don't have).

I have never talked to my doctor about it. Last time we talked, he said to get a personal trainer and go on a diet. He said if I didn't lose weight to come back and see him. So I might try to lose this on my own and if I can't then I'd go back and talk to him about my options. I just hate working out and not seeing results.

You can enter tricare in the search bar. I had no trouble but if they say 100 pounds and comorbidities, they won't approve you unless you have them. I've read many who were turned down...or they had the comorbidity like diabetes but only were 96 pounds over and were rejected. i heard (all this is hearsay, not personal experience, remember) that tricare uses the "medium frame" from the metlife ins table to see if you are 100 over or not.

After getting a referral from your PCM...

Tricare Prime will pay a consultation with a surgeon, then the surgeons office will send in your requests for approval for the surgery. I am Tricare and I had mine on 06/02/08, and have looked at my claims, and it's all taken care of...

You don't have to have co morbitites because I had none. I was just 100 lbs over weight. When you chose the office you want to work with all you have to do is be completely honest on the questionaire, and that's where your comorbitities come from, believe it or not. The surgeons office you work with to get the lapband wants you get to approved so they will work with you on getting that approval. You see normally they know what each insurance policy calls for to get approval ...Good luck!

Very lucky HF! I've read some real horror stories about ins (both tricare and others) I didn't have any trouble but my BMI was so high the rest just wasn't an issue.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
