Hello all !! Let me just start by saying thank god for this site. I am new to all of this, so please bear with me. I have been reading up on all of this lap band ... (stuff) an am very interested in doing it. I have been thinking about it for about 1 year now. The problem is that I have Kaiser Insurace, and don't really know if it covers it. I am 5'3" and 270lbs, so I think I would be a shoe in for this procedure. I have been over weight most of my life, but never this big. I have tried Phen-Phen (when i was 15 yrs old) and EVERY diet imaginable. I lose weight, but it always comes back double. I have been having lots of aches and pains now, and I am assuming its because of my weight.

Does anyone here know what I have to do to get this procedure. I dont want the gastric bypass as i feel its too invasive and i feel I might just need a little extra help ( like with the lap band). I am tired pf taking all of the diet pill, that I know are harming my body. I am desperate to find a tool to help me with my battle. I have 2 beautiful little girls who I want to see grow up to be beautifull women someday. Please help !!

Thank you so much for your help ...

hi there and welcome!

you're first step should be signing up for a free seminar. you mention you are in LA -- Cedars Sinai has a great program. You can call them and set up an appointment or sign up for one of their educational seminars at Cedars-Sinai Center for Weight Loss.

Once you go to a seminar, you'll need to start the process by (usually) going for a physical with your GP, obtaining a nutritional consultation with your surgeons office and a psychiatric evaluation (with the psychiatrist associated with your surgical practice).

I know there are more than a few folks on this board who have been banded @ Cedars -- they can definitely provide you with more detailed information.

Good luck and congratulations!

Thank you so much for your welcome and the info. :thumbup:Unfortunatly, I have Kaiser Insurance, so going to Cedars is not in my options. :w00t:

Do you know anything about Kaiser Insurance and the lap band? Does any one ?:cool2:

I'm tricare standard. May I suggest calling Kaiser and finding out from them what they need from you at your height/weight/age etc? You could enter "kaiser" in the search bar too. Calling them is probably a great place to start!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
