AngelWhispers 0 Posted August 25, 2008 My doctor did not put me on a pre-op diet. My only orders were that I had to quit birth control and start taking a B-complex Vitamin. I have pre-op on Thursday at the hospital and I'm wondering if it may be a problem if I've gained 5-8lbs since my first consultation on 7/16. Anyone know???:smile2:
RestlessMonkey 7 Posted August 25, 2008 If the doc didn't put you on a preop diet or tell you not to gain, then I assume it doesn't matter.
HeatherO 7 Posted August 25, 2008 I agree. If the doc did not give you a pre-op diet, it doesn't sound like he is too concerned about losing or gaining. However, that is a relatively big gain in a short period of time . . . are you keeping your eating under control? If you are dealing with the "last meal" syndrome and eating a lot of fats or unhealthy foods, your body may not be prepared for surgery. The pre-op diets are usually liver-shrinking diets in preparation for surgery. If you go in with a fatty liver, you may not get the surgery. You might want to consider a preop liquid diet at least for the next few days in preparation. It seems odd that the doctor would say go off your birth control, but all doctors are different and it is important to follow their advice. Most of our doctors told us to make sure we are on some form of birth control because your fertility shoots wayyy up when you lose a lot of weight in a short period of time. If you read the pregnancy thread, there have been a lot of bandster babies conceived directly or within a few months of banding . . . even for people with difficulty conceiving before. If you are not ready to become a mommy or remain abstinent in the next few months, you need some backup.
RestlessMonkey 7 Posted August 25, 2008 Docs have us discontinue birth control pills because they contribute/put patients at greater risk for blood clots.
RestlessMonkey 7 Posted August 25, 2008 After recovery from surgery, you should be able to go right back on the pill.
AngelWhispers 0 Posted August 26, 2008 Yea, I would have to say the weight gain is from the "last meal syndrome." lol. I'm usually able to loose weight pretty quick so I'll just try to loose it before the surgery. Yea I had to get off of the birth control due to the higher risk of blood clots.
