Can Ya'll Eat Soup?

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody! I was banded on August 12 (two weeks ago) and I am now able to eat cream Soups if I put them thru the blender. I have no pain or problem eating anything yet. I'm worried thou because I can eat ALOT of soup! I can eat a whole can of Soup by myself without feeling full or staisified! That makes me very nervous that I will not be able to lose weight because I can still eat a ton of soup.

Will I not be able to eat as much soup after I get a fill or does soup go right through the band? How much soup can you guys eat?

Soup goes right through the band. That is why you can eat so much. Once you start eating solid protien, your hunger pangs will be greatly lessened. When I was on cream Soups, I put unflavored Protein Powder in my soup. It seemed to help a little. Once you start on mushies it will be easier. I had egg drop soup then and the Protein was so nice. Plus I was able to eat yogurt and cottage cheese. Shaved turkey was also on my list. Just hang tough. You can do it!! You should be getting your first fill in 2 -4 weeks as well. then it will get a lot easier to stay satisfied.

IF you continue eating Soup after you get good restriction, it's best to choose a chunky soup. I love Wendy's Chili. It's hearty and it keeps me satisfied for a while. Thin, creamy Soups will go right through your band. Just hang in there for a while longer. I promise you see a difference when you get good restricion.

The way my nutritionist explained is that Soups should not be eaten with your meals. I know in the liquid phase it's different, but maybe it will help explain the process.

If you eat food and chew until it's mushy then have liquid (like soup) it will Water down the mushy food in your pouch and then go straight to your larger stomach and you won't get full.

She was reviewing my pre-surgery diet when we discussed this and I had 1 cup of bean with bacon Soup and a turkey sandwhich. She emphasized no soup with your meal.

So yes, everyone is correct, soup goes straight through the band.

I'm on liquids still myself so I know how it feels.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
