coughing at night and acidy vomit

Recommended Posts

I was banded on October 22nd 2007, and until recently I had no complaints.

I started coughing excessively at night, also vomiting liquids with a very bitter taste.

Is this normal?

Have you ever had issues w/gall bladder? Do you have any pain associated w/this?

I was told vomiting at all was BAD, so get a doc appt in ASAP.

 Good luck to you.

Definitely not normal. I had the same thing happen in April of 08. I was too tight. This can also be a sign of a slip though. Contact your doctor. They will probably take some fill out and let it heal. It is just getting irritated and will continue to get irritated and won't have a chance to heal properly.

NOT normal. What you are experiencing is acid reflux, a common problem with the lap band. I suffered from this severely for months to the point where I had esophageal strictures from scarring and had to have my esophagus dilated back open. It had developed so much scar tissue from the acid, it was narrowed, and nearly nothing would pass through. Often times it happens from being overly full. A light unfill will help. Overeating before bedtime or drinking a lot before bedtime will also cause this. Try not eating 2 hours before bed, get a small de-fill if this just started after a recent fill, sleeping with your head elevated helps, (not a long term solution) the newer PPI Proton Pump Inhibitors like Nexium, Protonix, Aciphex, Prilosec help reduce stomach acid production so that if the acid does come up, it is lower acidic PH and it's not as irritating. Talk to your surgeon, a gastroenterologist, etc,,,,, it's a very common problem, but from experience, can also have significant long term consequences if not dealt with.

Lori is right on the money with her response. I had the same problem after having the perfect fill. They took a little out and instant cure for me. We are sloley adding Fluid back in after allowing the irritation to heal for a few months. I'm guessing you are having a hard time keeping food down also??

Hi! I have not had this problem, but heard that it could possibly be because you have too much of a fill.

Good luck! I would also call your doctor and get his/her opinion!

Thank you so much all of you for your helpful replies. Yes, it is true that I don't keep a lot of food down, I do best eating just Soups etc.

However, I had my last fill about 5 month ago, and this problem only started a few weeks ago.

I will call my doctor for an appointment, I'm just afraid do de-fill, I can't afford to gain anything back!!!

I am so thrilled with my weightloss, I never want to gain weight again!!

Can anyone relate to this?

I had this problem after a fill in July. I had a beach trip planned and was freaking that if I took the unfill I'd gain some weight back so I dealt with the reflux until it got unbearable - then had to take .4 ccs out. In the end it didnt matter, I still lost weight. I totally understand the fear but you have to trust in yourself. The band is a great tool and it teaches all of us how to eat and when we should stop. But its still just a tool - it cant do it alone. Trust in your judgment and allow it to work without hurting yourself.

I have had occasional bouts of it as well lately and am thinking about a slight unfill. Not eating late or drinking late have a definite impact on it. I think I have to accept the fact that after being a bandster, I really should never ingest anything directly before bed.

I too suffer from this. I had a bit of an unfill done, and an upper GI. No slip thank God. But I still get acid. Not nightly like it was, but I do get it. I go back next week (it's been a few weeks now) to get my fill put back in, but only part of it. I'm eating way too much food and almost anything I want. That is so not good for me.

I have had this come and go in the year and a half that I have had my band. You might not need to have very much taken out, but you probably do need at least a slight unfill.

You shouldn't gain weight back if you just have a little bit taken out.

It doesn't make sense why the band gets tighter after you have had the fill for awhile, but it happens all the time. It's dangerous to have this happening. I am glad you are calling your doctor.

Everyone who has posted back to you has given you the correct advise. If you don't get it taken care of soon, you could end up needing a complete unfill, or worse yet, losing your band somewhere down the road.

You have acid reflux. See your doc and take a pill for it. You probably will not need any Fluid taken out simply for reflux. For band slippage, you would need to, but I don't think that's what your issue is.

Hi!

I just came back from my doctor and it was confirmed that I was too tight.

The esophogram showed that my upper pouch overlapped the band. He unfilled me half and said I should let the band rest and have another esophogram in 2 weeks. Hopefully the band will reposition itself back to normal and I won't need surgery to correct the slip.

Did anyone have this experience? Any one had a slight slip, and had it adjust by itself?

Is it possible to keep the weight off even with an unfill? I am terrified to gain some weight back! I lost 41 lb and finally fit into a size 10!! A dream come true!

Thanks again for all your advice and care.

I too have been experiencing the same feelings for the past couple of nights. I haven't had a fill in a few months but my eating pattern has changed for the last couple of nights. I am eating to late and going right to sleep afterwards and I don't think I'm chewing my food throughly as it seems to be stuck. I said I will work on my eating for the next couple of days and may schedule an appointment with my Doctor for next week. I have also been snacking on chip and dip. Any additional advice is appreciated.

luvinke - this was happening to me too. I got a fill 8/6 and it didn't start happening until 9/6 - a whole month later.

I quit eating past 7:30 pm and for the past few nights, no reflux, no waking up every hour to cough my head off.

My suggestion is eat earlier, and cut the late night eating out, it helped me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
