When You Say Something Doesn't Go Down Well...

Recommended Posts

What exactly do you mean? What exactly happens? How does it feel?

I am no where near foods yet as I was just banded on the 20th but I'm curious.

I took a small pill today, as per my Dr.s list - it was a Vitamin he prescribes to everyone. It was horrible!!! I felt like it was stuck in my throat. Ended up going to the bathroom and gagging. While gagging huge burp sounds were coming out of my mouth and my saliva was dripping out tasting like posion. Is this whats going to happen? It was horrible. I won't be taking another pill before going to my Dr.s office for my 1 week checkup. If thats what happens when you eat foods that the band doesn't like, I'm going to be scared to eat anything!

Congradulations on your band! What on earth kind of pill did your Dr give you? I never heard of that before. I take a chewable vit and swallow a small pill everyday without a problem and I am well restricted.

There are different feeling and things that go on when food gets stuck or you eat too fast, take too big big of bites or swallow before you chew well enough. There are also signs to tell you that you have had enough to eat.

You "PB"(productive burp) when you are full and may have eaten too much. It is when food or heavy flem (we call this slimming too) comes back up before sliding through your band. This does not hurt and it is a sign to stop eating if you do not know the "physical" feeling before this happens. Usually I get the hiccups before this happens and I know I have had enough. Then you know you have restriction and the band is working.

When food gets stuck, this is different and painful! I read someone else on this site explain it like this "it feels like a flaming golf ball in the middle of my chest between my boobs" and they were right on target. That is why I chew and chew my food and try to eat slow. It is a new way of eating that we all must learn. Good Luck, you should be fine!

hahaah i had that golf ball feeling...only...it's right above my right boob! LOL i figured that's what it meant. but thanks for all the wonderful information. i did in fact eat too fast one night last week...work was horrible, i'd gotten home late, i had a headache and i still had to eat. i wasn't thinking. and half way through my tuna salad i thought i was just going to spew! not a fun feeling and not one i will experience ever again if i can help it. you're so right about learning to eat again.

Great info - thank you.

I learned the hard way yesterday that eating too quickly is painful. I had been out all day running errands, forgot to eat, got home ravenous and ate my mushy Soup way too quickly. I had the 'golf ball on fire' feeling and had to get up and walk around while praying that I wouldn't throw-up....thankfully it passed within a few minutes. I'd hate to think what would have happened if it was 'hard' food :smile2:

I learned my lesson (I really really hope!!!) and am thankful it was with 'soft' food.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
