Let's talk booze!

OK my fellow VVs, let's see if this poll starts a discussion. Now that you are banded, and after 6 months are settling into a routine, what is your alcohol consumption pattern?

For me, Beer is out - the whole carbonation issue

Everything else - I have so few calories, I want FOOD! That, and my social life sucks, so the opportunities to go out and have a drink or two are few and far between. Thus, since banding, not one alcoholic drink.

Silly me, forgot to put my own response! DUH!!!

Since banding I've had about 1/3 of a bottle of a wine cooler. I didn't drink much before but I sure do crave a beer or mudslide once in a while, especially when it's hot....like March thru October. LOL

I don't really drink anymore, probably hadn't in a year or so before surgery, so it hasn't been an issue. My surgeon says no and I don't like to drink calories so I won't anyway.

I have never been much of a drinker so I haven't tried anything since my surgery.

I have wine about once every two weeks, I hate beer so it wasn't a problem. When I go out (maybe once every few months) I have cranberry juice and vodka or if I am at a restuarant with friends but don't feel like eating I have a pomegranate martini. I was a drinker before surgery. Not every night by any means, but I would have a glass of wine or one drink about three times a week maybe. I only drink on weekends now (if I do at all) because it effects me so strongly now. A glass of wine used to relax me, now it intoxicates me.

I love my wine!! I only drink it on the weekends and I account for the calories by ramping up my weekend workouts. It hasn't affected the scale as I am still slowly and steadily losing. I love my band!!:smile2:

I have a few on the weekends usually. No real problems. I'm not a huge beer fan, but when I have it, I let it sit a few minutes to de-fizz. Same with the Mike's or anything carbonated. I'm not a soda fan. And I love wine, but now drink the cheap wimpy kind. If I have the good strong stuff, I have to mix a little fruit juice in it to tame it down a bit! (I'm sure this upsets my "wine snob" father-in-law!) I do get tipsy much faster and pay more attention to the callories just runnin' on through me!

I have a few mixer drinks each week. I have vodka and melon.....*insert Homer Simpson growl* I haven't had beer since I have been banded.

I gave up Pepsi at the start of the year as I thought I would not be able to drink it any more, but took it up again about a month ago. It doesn't affect me unless I gulp it down! Then it hurts.:crying:

I think anything in moderation is not going to hurt our pursuits.

and pretty much any fluffy drink..

I've never heard them described that way before! :crying:

I've never tasted a martini, and the few times in the past when I've had mixed drinks (or what I call umbrella drinks), I've found them WAY too sweet. Beer, or a really dry - almost burn your throat dry - wine or whiskey/scotch/rye on the rocks were my drinks of choice.

If you don't mind, I will chime in.:crying:

I have had some business events this summer, and I found it better to be walking around with a glass of wine than to be picking at appetizers. I attempted to sip champagne, and it hurt. So never did that again. I have been sticking to wine and to frozen drinks, mostly margaritas and pina coladas. Don't understand that though. I can't drink cold Water, but can drink a frozen drink.....:wink2:

I don't drink alcohol, so this hasn't been an issue for me. I was wondering the other day if banded people can still drink beer, or if it's too fizzy. I guess it's carbonated, so should be on the no-drink list?

I'll have a glass of wine maybe four nights out of the week, and maybe if we go out that will be two glasses.

That's about it, once in a blue moon on a hot day I might have a beer, but I can only drink one. I never drink spirits or cocktails at all.

Very very occasionally we might pour a Drambui or Baileys after dinner, just a tiny one in a liqueur glass.

So I'm maybe get 600 calories a week from alcohol on average.

I had half of a bottle of mojito yesterday. Wow, it's amazing how little it takes to give me a big buzz now. And while I did enjoy the drink, the buzz left me feeling really groggy which I didn't enjoy. So, guess I won't be doing that often. I do plan to test out some wine soon though. It's also really hard for me to deal with the calories from it, I'd rather have dessert. LOL

As mentioned when I began this thread, I haven't had any alcohol, and neither DH or I miss it (or so I thought). This weekend, DH says, maybe we should start making wine (used to do this about a decade ago). I'm not drinking, and he thinks we should (re)start this hobby.

How strong will my resolve be in another 6 months?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
