Hi everyone,

I havn't yet got a date, but have had all the pre appointments, just waiting for the team to have their meeting and decide when, probably sometime in October, am nervous and excited at the same time, I have been reading alot of the posts on this website and to be honest some peoples posts have just plain scared me , all the gas problems etc, I would love to know if people resume a somewhat normal?? life further down the track, though I am impressed with the results well done everyone!!

WOW New Zealand! Hello!

I haven't had the band yet but can share with you what the nurse practitioner from my surgeon's office told me....horror stories are horrible but the fact is most people have no issues, heal fine, and can eat most things. She said red stringy meat (not all red meat) and white bread are the biggest culprits but it depends on each person. SO rather than flipping out I am just feeling true empathy for those souls who are suffering but believing 100% that I'm going to get through it fine.

I didn't have issues post op when my gall bladder was removed like everyone said I would; I'm sure this will be similar.

It's nice to know the risks! BUT not all of us have it as hard.

Thanks for that it does make sense what you are saying, and most of the time I feel the same, then I read something on here and my rational thoughts go out the window.

Bummer about the fatty liver, but at least you don't have to wait to long now, well good luck and keep me posted on how you go.

Thanks Neenz! You too! My surgeon, believe it or not, told us that folds in Australia and New Zealand typically lose better (more excess weight) than we Americans! So I told him I planned to help the US up the curve a little! :(

Hmm I wonder why?? It has taken me ages to decide whether to get the sleeve or the band, have heard so many different things about each it is a hard decision to make, specially cause in NZ we don't really have insurance that covers this kind of thing so its all self pay and a huge expense its over $16,000 so feel like i need to be making the right decision :)

I was under the impression, from his implication, that we Americans tend to "eat around the band" and not exercie. Don't know if that's it or not...

unless it's something in your Water? LOL Supposedly ya'll are just better at following docs orders and so seeing good results. SO I want to be like you! :)

lol don't know about that but that is really interesting hehe, wish I was one of those too, I am not one of those people who are "addicted" to exercising!! I mean what is that all about :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
