Medifast Pro-Op Diet & Headaches

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone -

I am getting banded next Thursday, August 28th and I just started my pro-opt Medifast/300 calorie diet. I notised I'm getting headches and I'm cranky. It can't possibily because I'm not getting enough protien; I'm following what I need to do exactly. Is this just the initical shock of not eating like I'm used to? Did this happen to anyone else and will I feel less cranky as I'm more days into it?

Can anyone tell me what it's been like for them?

The first three days for me were horrible. I stopped drinking Diet Pepsi and started eating healthy. What you are feeling are withdrawls from all the carbs, calories, and all the other junk we use to eat. I was a mess, I felt nauseated, sick and the headache. I even took a Vicodin and it did nothing for me. Finally, I took excedrin for the headache and that did the job, it contains caffeine so it helped. Stick with it after a few days you will start feeling better.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I thought I was going crazy & thinking, man, I am such a wussy. But I was thinking along the same lines; I'm mostly likely detoxing from my nemesis, sugar. Ironically, I'm not all that hungry just headachy & bitchy. Thanks for the support. This is my 1st post and its great being able to ask & shout out for help on the spot. Thanks again. K

Sugar and carbs give us a serotonin rush, and that makes us feel good. When we cut them out, our serotonin levels crash, especially if we use them a lot for a boost. I always get headaches and feel super depressed when I cut them out. I hope you feel better soon!

Hi Katie,

Sorry to hear about your headaches. I am currently doing the medifast as well, certainly not my idea of a good time. I have had a couple of headaches for which I take... 2 excedrin and 1 advil sinus... it works like a charm. This regimen has also worked for me in the past for Migraines. I highly recommend it to anyone that is having headache problems. You can actually take 2 advil sinus if needed, instead of just 1.

I wish you well.

Anna

OMG, I was horrible the first 3-5 days. For the first time since Tuesday of this week, I feel good. I was a "B" yesterday and my husband was just so patient, bless his heart. It's sugar and real food withdrawls. This medifast is CRAP!!! I guess I shouldn't complain since I've lost 9 lbs. My headaches finally subsided this morning when I woke up. I am now doing a 3 day So Easy mucoid plaque cleanse and giving medifast a break for the next 3 days. Good luck with your surgery. :(

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
