I bought some Optima Slim Fast shakes yesterday. I think there is a difference between these and Slim Fast Low Carb shakes. Difference?? Do I need to take the Optima shakes back and exchange them? Thanks in advance for your help. Becky (day 2 of 21 day pre-op diet):smile2:

You can go to SlimFast.com and check out the nutritional info for all the SlimFast shakes.

In short, the Low Carb has 20 g Protein, 5 g carbs, 190 calories per can; Optima has 10 g Protein, 24 g carbs, 180 calories per can.

So, yeah, there's a pretty big difference, especially if it is protein that you are after.

low carb slim fast shake (creamy chocolate) - 2g sugar

optima slim fast shake (creamy milk chocolate) - 17g sugar

It is up to you what you do with them but this is the main difference.

Did your doctor specify? My doctor's office specifically says Optima for the pre-surgery diet. I love the taste of the chocolate! I still drink them now for my Breakfast when I'm in a hurry.

Did your surgeon tell you which one to buy? Mine was very exacting about exactly which brand and which one within the brands...and it is VERY low carb. The low carb part, I think, is what helps your body pull glycogen from your liver and helps to shrink it preop.

Best bet is to get exactly what your surgeon has told you to buy.

Thank you Misty!! You are doing great. I have a question - on the tickers at the bottom of everyone's replys - does the total weight lost include pre-op loss or just weight lost since the banding? Again... thanks for taking time to answer my questions.

Not sure if this helps anyone or not, but my doc suggests the Carnation Instant Breakfast with NO SUGAR ADDED and then add some dry non-fat milk to it for more Protein vs. the Slimfast etc. I have found the box powder packets version and bottle version at Wal-Mart but the NO SUGAR ADDED is kinda hard to find sometime...you can add fruit etc to it too - I am having a hard times keeping my kiddos away from it too - they really like it

Becky, I can't speak for everyone else, but mine includes the pre-op loss, which wasn't very much because I got approved and scheduled so quickly. 302 was what my surgeon recorded for me at my first appointment with him. The pre-op diet is just as much a part of this journey as the rest of it, so I'd think most people include that on their tickers. :smile2:

My ticker starts with highest weight which is beginning of 6 month pre-op diet. I have lost a total of 47 lbs. now but only 21 of that is post-op, 9 lbs. lost during the 2 week pre-op diet, and 17 lbs. lost before the 2 week pre-op diet.

Thank you brown bear!! I was hoping that it was ALL of the weight taken off. I am now on day 3 of my 3 week pre-op diet and because I have lots to lose, I think I will lose quite a bit during this pre-op stage. I consider it all part of my journey to a healthier me. You are doing great!! Thanks again for the reply!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
