Well I am not doing so well with this Clear Liquids and Protein Shake thing. I am 8 days post op. The mere though of another Protein shake makes me wanna hurl. (sorry lol) I am supposed to be on this diet for TWO more weeks. I have tried protein shake after protein shake, now even the texture, the feel the cold, yuck. I am feeling discouraged because I am not able to do this. I am not getting anything in but Snapple Diet Peach Tea. I am tired, hubgry, and upset. I am waiting to hear back from the nutritionist about moving on to the pureed stage. I am afraid it will hurt my band. Why did they have me doing it for 3 weeks if it was NECESSARY? I am afraid I am going to end up dehydrated, ketosis, something awful. :(

Robyn,

I had Clear Liquids and Protein shakes for 4 days, then I got to add some other things, like creamed Soups (strained), pudding, Jello, yogurt.

For my clear liquids, I went to the chinese restaraunt and got won ton Soup. The dog got the won tons. I diluted the broth (it was strong) with some chicken broth and that was great.

Later I had some cream of potato Soup (with Water and strained) and some cream of mushroom soup (made with beef broth and strained). Those helped.

After that, I got some cheese soup packages (beer cheese and 5 cheese with italian herb). Since they were kind of rich, I added broth and potato and leek soup. They were yummy.

I also added my Protein shake powders to yogurt, soy milk, a mixture of skim milk and Water, anything for variety.

Hope this helps.

Robyn, have you tried gatorade, chicken broth, Jello, popsicles, orange juice was a good liquid for me, it seem to keep me satisfied. Dont give up, you can get through this. What kind of Protein Drink are you drinking? Are you blending it with ice? That helps to keep full longer. Also try hot chocloate or hot teas. Hang in there , as much as it sucks, it is all worth it in the end :(

We all have been where you are and we are all here to tell about it :)

It wasn't that long ago I was in your shoes. It is hard but you must adhere to what you were to told to do to heal . Stay on the diet and take it a moment at a time if you have to... It is so worth it. Before you know it you can start with new soft mushy foods. I tolerated tea with alot of half and half. I drank broth and Soup at hand. At first certain flavors did not sit well of certain foods but as others said dilute and take it slow. When one day I could only eat a few sips or teaspoons of something the next day or two I could eat twice as much of. I used to go crazy with my family around eating pizza and everything !! I literally would have to leave the house! Even today I ate out with my kids and I just simply cannot eat certain things but yes I had a nice piece of fish and chocolate pudding. It is worth being down this weight. I also can't believe it is almost eight months since my surgery. It was the best thing I could ever have done for myself period. I am a different person. We all know what you are going through and you will be fine...keep reading older posts and get as much info as you can.. It will help you through the stages ....

Robyn, I know exactly how you feel I was banded on 5-11-05 and went crazy the first few days. I am now almost 1 month post-op and am doing great. I really liked brocolli cheese Soup. I thinned it out with a little milk. Borden makes a high Protein milk that has 10 grams of protein in an 8 oz glass. It is not the best plain (it tastes a little sweet), but I mix that with carnation instant Breakfast and it is great. Hang in there.

Robyn, if this was what your nutritionalist told you then you should be OK,

Remember there are several hundred people on this board and every single one of us has had different post op instructions, some got to eat 3 days after surgery, some went to soft foods within 48 hours of surgery, some had to wait 4 weeks for solids, etc.. the point is, with all of us having different instructions , we all have our bands in tact . . I was told by my Dr. that there is not set protocol for post op diet with the lap band every doctor adopts their own. If it will make you feel any better and less worry , put your mushy foods in the blender, drink them through a straw , you are still getting the nutrition and the caloric intake but less digestion process to go through if it is in liquid form. I'm sure you will be OK and Iam sure you are not the first person to call their nutritionalist to say they are struggling.. and Iam sure you are not the first person the nutritionalist told to move on to mushy foods, Your going to do great!

Nope. Just keep the consistency on the thin side...to make stuff like tuna or egg salad a true "mushy" mix up the salad, then run it through the food processor so it's the consistency of spread, absolutely no lumps.

Don't overcook the scrambled eggs so if you don't like them on the runny side, opt for something else. Try egg drop Soup too...that will have more Protein and be easy on your stomach.

My surgeon has us on 1 day of liquids, then immediately onto purees/mushies for 2 weeks and she has a very low occurrence of slippage.

I assume this nutritionist works with your surgeon's practice??

Nancy

Well when I spoke to the nutritionost she told me to go on to mushies, try to get some tuna, scrambled eggs, add Protein powder to pudding......but am I gonna hurt my band?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
