Gaining Weight and Hunger

Recommended Posts

I am on day 3 since the surgery. I am feeling great (up and about) and overall the pain is really diminished.

I gained weight at the hospital (despite only taking in about 4 oz of Protein Shake for the day and 1/2 I was there.) I know it was Water weight from the IV.

but now I am home and actually am hungry! I had 2 shakes today and about 29 grams of Protein in one (including the soy milk) and 20 grams in another shake (including the soy milk.) I know I need a bit more protein for one dya, but I also don't think I should be hungry.

Do I just make another shake, or do I just suffer with some mild hunger? I am drinking water and crystal light. I have only had about 40 oz so far, but I need 24 oz more. It's 8 p.m. here. Would you make another shake or just hold out for tomorrow?

I would suggest some more concentrated Protein Drink that doesn't add a lot of calories. For example, Isopure and IDS whey bullets. They are Clear Liquids. I think you need more Protein. That was my problem a couple of days ago. I was ravenous. Also, I have been walking vigorously each night, at least a mile. Doing that and drinking Water while you are walking pretty much diminishes your appetite. Trust me.

I had gained 6 lbs in surgery and I had NO food for 2 days, being hooked up to an IV the whole time. I still have a gas tummy, but I don't feel gassy. I must have gas though, because I have had intermittent left shoulder pain that gets quite painful. Whether I walk or not. Good luck. I think we have all been there at one time or another.

i disagree with all of the above -- you are healing. this is not the time to try to lose weight, but to make sure you're getting all the nutrition you need to heal properly.

you have all the time in the world to lose weight -- an extra glass a milk a day while recovering is not going to make a major impact.

I'm with Kristen on this one. The weight you "gained" is from the IV. I know I was swollen for almost 2 weeks. My doc's office repeatedly stressed that they don't worry about weight loss until the first fill. Just take care of yourself!!

I do not advocate drinking milk one day post op at ALL. I'm following the instructions of my surgeon. Clear liquids does not include milk. However a clear liquid does include Isopure or IDS whey bullets or some other source that I don't know of. Therefore, I absolutely stand by my advice.

Plus, I don't see what advice you are disagreeing with. Walking, drinking clear liquids and Protein are all part of the healing process. Perhaps you ladies should go back and look at your postop instructions. I said ABSOLUTELY nothing about weight loss being a priority and I don't believe DEBSKI did either. I would NEVER tell someone to go against the wishes of their surgeon. I have lost 26 lbs in this process. I must be doing something right. Good luck!

I don't think my doc recommended a clear liquid diet after surgery. I went on one before surgery and was already drinking Protein drinks in the hospital.

I am just having as many shakes as I can have in a day and getting as much Protein as possible. I am still a bit hungry but it's ok! I am dealing with it!

littlefroggy, I believe everybody's postop instructions are different. I just don't like people putting words in my mouth or implying that I am telling someone what to do. I would NEVER tell anyone to go against the advice of their physician. If someone asks advice, I give them my side of the story. My side of the story is that week one, I do Clear Liquids. This includes SF Jello, Water, crystal light, Isopure, etc. Week 2 is creamed liquids including yogurt, pudding, creamy Protein Shakes, etc. Week 3 and 4 I add creamed Soups, and purees. Then I move on from there. I believe every surgeon has his own reason for recommending a certain regime. My brother had gastric bypass last year, and his diet was pretty much the same. I tend to think that since my surgeon does other surgeries that he uses similar diets for all of his patients. What I DO know is that the stomach must heal after the band is put on, and some doctors want healing in different ways. I think some foods immediately after surgery probably are not tolerated by the body. For instance, eating a stage 3 food the day after surgery might cause more gas, bloating, diarrhea...etc...and you know, milk can cause diarrhea. When someone is sick with the flu, etc, usually a doctor will prescribe clear fluids and plenty of rest.

Good luck!

My advice to you is to get off the scale and concentrate on healing for the first six weeks. We all want you to heal up nice and easy.

I was starving the whole time. It sucks, honestly. But I know you can do it. Keep your head up.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
