Hurts So Bad To Breathe In - Normal?

Recommended Posts

i had my band put in this morning. Its so painful to breathe in. It hurts at the center of my chest and goes up into both sides of my clavical. Is this the gas? I also had a hieatal (sp?) hernia reapair. This is the most painful part - breathing!

Did anyone else have this problem? Please tell me if its normal, what you did and how long until it went away. Its really painful.

I haven't been banded yet, but this sounds like something I had once. It might be an esophageal spasm. Let's see what the veterans can tell us!

I hope you feel better soon!

Yes, what you are describing sounds like the chest pains from the surgery gas that is moving and escaping upward in your body. I felt that moving helped me and it did go away. Hang in there.

Just to be safe though... If you have serious lung/breathing difficulty, get to your doctor as that could be a sign of a blot clot issue. I hope they gave you post op instructions on how to contact them but go right on back to the hospital's ER if you need to.

Thanks. My mom called someone she knows that had a band put in an confirmed that it was normal. It was just scary. Last night I started gagging like I was going to throw up and while I was gagging lots of gas was escaping. It was scary but I'm glad I got some of it up. It still hurts but not nearly as bad as yesterday.

Hi,

I too had similar pains and a hernia repair - sounds normal however if it gets too bad, go to the doctor...I mistook a kidney infection for band pain :smile2:

I am having the exact same thing and have been told by my doctor office that it is the gas. It is getting a little better every day.

Had my band put in on Monday the 18th and also had according to my surgeron a large hiatal herinia repaired.. breathing was difficult .. but just so you know it does get better... It is Thursday and I am feeling much better... You really have to use that breathing sperometor... not sure the sp... but it really does help...and you have to walk... and walk and walk...

Hope you feel better soon....

Same story here, I also had a hiatal hernia repair. Your diaphragm is the muscle you use to breathe and that is what they sewed up to repair the hernia so it makes sense that breathing is painful. I'm much better now but for the first few days it was very difficult and a big yawn or sneeze still hurts. It's expected but as others have said, don't suffer too much without calling your doctor, better safe than sorry.

i third or fourth or fifth the breathing trouble. i was banded last week and had a hernia repair -- basically, our diaphragm has been stitched up. my doc told me to continue to expect breathing pain for another week or so. my deep breaths kinda feel like they stutter.

keep up the pain meds and be patient. it totally gets better.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
