throwing up & supportelss

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone...

Ok this is my first time on a forum like this.

I was "banded" on 2/12/08 to date I've lost 43 lbs. My Dr says i'm way a head of the curve. However, I'm affraid it's coming at a price. I throw up a few times a week.

I'm affraid that I was "filled" too much too quickly.

How much is too much??

Hey Cal,

You know, I have been wondering the same thing for the last few weeks until now.

My ailments: I had my 2nd fill on July 27th. For the last few weeks I have struggled with solids and thought it was because my body was getting use to the restriction. How was I able to tell the difference since I never felt restriction until then?? I have only been able to drink my Protein shakes and liquidfy Cream of Wheat all this time. Eventually, over time, any attempt with solids, very small bites, would get stuck. This is where I have leard what stuck feels like. Taking advice from other bandsters, I would drink warm/hot tea in hopes to get it to go down. Helps a little bit.

It wasn't until this weekend when I decided to try a solid again, only to have it stuck once again and then I experienced my first vomit episode. It got to the point where eventually anything I would eat, even yogurt, would come back up. It continued till Monday and then I just resorted to liquids again.

This morning at 4:15 am I woke up to a horrible pain in the middle of my back and when I turned on my side my stomach hurt (where band is located). I sat up immediately in distress and hubby tried everything to make me confortable. It got to a point where swallowing saliva hurt like hell. The pain I experienced when swallowing was a burning and pulling pain when it passed through the band. Thats when I called the call center to have the doc on call contact me. I met with the doc this morning and had to have my band deflated. He suspects there is edema due to an overfill. I have to have an upper GI done to ensure that the band is ok.

Alot of what I was experiencing I thought was normal. Band is definately tighter in mornings, and I thought that I was eating too fast at times. But when it gets to a point where the first bite just hurts like hell going down, and your in distress to get it to pass, or you vomit, then you need to see your doctor as soon as possible to avoid injury.

I hope everything goes well for you.

Well you really don't wanna be throwing up...it causes issues and could cause slippage, you might need to talk to ur doc and get that band adjusted...

Also, I have lost over 40 something pounds in 3 1/2 months. I thought it was a bit too much too. But talking to other bandsters who have had surgery close to my surgery date, we all seem to be losing the same amount of weight. Keep your head up!

Do you know if it is the same foods/types of foods that are making you sick? Try to keep a food log and notice if it is the same foods or maybe if you are rushing trying to eat that meal. I don't really think that you are too tight or you would probably throw up more than that. Maybe you are just restricted and there are certain foods you should avoid. Keep me updated.

Fortunately I haven't been sick yet. I had my first fill today. The PA put in 2ccs and had to unfill 1cc, because I was too restricted drinking Water. Hopefully, I will do well tomorrow.

I was having a problem immediately after my second fill, but soon learned that the problem was me and not my band. I was eating too fast and not chewing enough. I thought I was doing ok, but I kept pb'ing. After a pb, I was also not going onto liquids for the rest of the day to give my stomach a rest.

Once I realized what the problem was, I modified my behavior and found that the fill has actually put me at my sweet spot. I just had to learn more about bandster behavior.

However, you should always be cautious. If you know that you are taking your time, chewing extremely well, giving your stomach a break for a day or two after a pb and still having constant problems than a slight unfill is definitely needed.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
