Annie0341 0 Posted August 20, 2008 Hi all Is caffiene allowed on the pre-op diet?
SuzanneG 1 Posted August 20, 2008 I don't remember any restriction on caffiene preop. The reason it is restricted postop is because it contributes to dehydration, which can be a problem after surgery.
Lanakila 1 Posted August 20, 2008 Hi all Is caffiene allowed on the pre-op diet? I knocked it off pre-op so that I wouldn't be insane when I was post-op, in pain, and hungry. I didn't need withdrawals from caffeine on top of that!
BDS_Geologist 0 Posted August 20, 2008 It's good to wean yourself off caffiene during the pre-op diet. You won't get any on the morning after your surgery. And you will have a splitting headache in addition to any surgery pain that you have. Bryan Getting banded next Tuesday August 26!
Maribelle 0 Posted August 21, 2008 The pre-op diet at my clinic allows coffee and tea, and I asked about diet pop and the dietician said that is fine. I've got a teething infant now, so I need any extra boost I can get!
Florida Pete 1 Posted August 21, 2008 I am in the same boat with you Maribelle on the teething infant but personally I stay away from caffiene as much as possible anyway. I don't have to say how much of a vice it is cause we all already know it. Here is my advise; your giving yourself a new chance at changing your life to be healthier so why not kick the caffiene habit. Now let me tell you I used to be a very heavy soda drinker. I would easily put down a 12 pack of Pepsi a day. I have never been much of a coffee drinker but the soda was what I got my caffiene from. Along with sugar and all the carbination. I made the decision a few years ago to cut out the caffiene and went to Sprite and then about a year ago I cut out soda all together. Trust me when I quit the caffiene I did have the withdrawls and it was not easy. But like has already been mentioned by others here I would not want to have to deal with the caffiene withdrawl at the same time of recovering from surgery. Nachtigall 0 Posted August 21, 2008 I had coffee on my pre op diet (two cups a day) and no headaches because of withdrawal after the surgery. I still drink two small cups a day (one around 10 am and one about 2 pm) with a little 1% milk. But I also have about two liters of Water a day, that's about 8.5 cups. ~Kat
lapbandbarb 0 Posted August 21, 2008 I am in the same boat with you Maribelle on the teething infant. You are a funny guy, Florida Pete. You gave me my first laugh today! And incase you didn't see my other post, you really supported Hammer and I admire that.:smile2: I have cut down on my coffee intake and gave up soda all together. I was never much into soda anyway. My Dr said up to two cups of coffee a day is fine both pre and post op. I used to have it with tons of sugar but now have gotten used to it with just a little skim milk. I make sure that I drink tons of Water a day to prevent dehydration. It would be hard to keep going without my cafe!
Florida Pete 1 Posted August 21, 2008 Thank you for the compliment on supporting Hammer. Really that's what we are all here to do is learn, get support, and give support. :smile2: One thing I did to cut the soda out of my diet was I told my wife that I did not want us to have soda in the house anymore. Thankfully she is very supportive of us both eating better and living better and so we stopped buying soda. Also I don't keep it at work and the soda machine here is two floors down so it's not easy access. So I end up drinking Water all day long. coffee is redily available here but thankfully I really do not like the taste of coffee. LOL  I have lost 20 lbs since January and I really believe it is attributed to two things. First and formost the cutting of soda out of my diet and second the major reduction in eating out. Thanks to the economy on that one :cheers2:
SuzanneG 1 Posted August 22, 2008 (edited) I gave caffiene up several years ago and gave soda's up in Jan when I got my band. Like FL Pete, my DH is very supportive and gave it up with me. He doesn't even order it when we go out. It sure made giving the soda up that much easier. The coffee, however, I refuse to give up. I have a 16oz Decaf every single day with the most yummy sweet, creamy, French vanilla Creamer from WaWa. It's fat and sugar full, but my only vice and I only have that one small serving of cream every day. I counted points for it on WW, counted calories when I was doing that, but I have steadfastly refused to give it up! Even though it's decaf, my head still thinks of coffee as a necessity for starting my day. The warm liquid also seems to help prime my band for the day. I don't know, I just feel like until I drink the coffee, nothing else is going down. Soda..... you can have it, but I'll fight you for my sweet, creamy coffee!!
