We've been on the road to surgery since January and have completed all reqwuirements, including 6 mo diet program, etc. SUrgeons office turned in paperwork to BCBS last week and providing that we get approval, we plan to have surgery in mid-October.

Our surgeons office suggested that we both have surgery on the same day. But before we make a decision, I thought it might be good to get some feedback from those of you who have been down the surgery recovery road before. Could you have done it and handled recovery with your partner/spouse in the same condition?

We have a young child but we also have a very stong support system with both sets of grandparents in town. One set of grandparents can keep him and the other can help with our needs.

Are we crazy for considering this??

Thanks for much for any guidance.....

Shan

hubby and i were banded the same day (no children). although we sat the day after in our media chairs on pain meds wondering "what did we just do to ourselves" - i could not imagine going through this w/out him.

in putting the weight on after marriage, we decided to get fit together - same time, and it's the best thing we've done for each other & have never regretted it.

i would take advantage of your support system in taking care of your child for a few days, found hubby had a longer recovery (but he is a big baby)

NO your not crazy - if you can do it together, i highly suggest it!!

DH & I just met a nice couple last night (at Sweet Tomatoes, eating dinner) that had been banded a week apart. They were in their 40's (I'm guessing here) and didn't have any little ones with them. They say that it was great to have a little time between the surgeries so that they could take care of each other.

I'll be having surgery before my DH (a couple of weeks I think). We have a 4yo son and we have no family here. My parents are the closest and they are an hour away (and both work). I hope that I can have an end of the week surgery date and that DS can spend the weekend at the grandparents house....

If we didn't have a small child, and had a better support team here, we'd likely have surgery at the same time. I like the idea of being at the same place at the same time (like the pre-op & post-op diets).

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
