It is difficult to get in all the Protein your doctor suggests, stay low on the carbs and still get enough of the right food to make you poop! I am not nearly as regular as I used to be, but one thing that works whenever I drink it is an herbal tea called "Get Regular". I found it at Whole Foods, but I know there are plenty of grocery stores that carry some form of it. I am faithful on the 64 oz of Water per day and that doesn't even help! But, the tea, does the trick! I'm sure our bodies have to just get used to what we are putting them through. Changes. Good changes.

my doc said phillips milk of magnesia, tastes gross, but does the trick, and maybe counts as a small snack!!!! haha

WRONG!! I'm pretty sure it has to exhibit some form of TASTINESS to be a "snack". Anything that's 'gross' cannot carry that esteemed label. :cursing:

Back on topic: I'm getting good results from adding a serving of Activia yogurt into my morning Breakfast shake. I was skeptical of their "14 day" guarantee, but by golly, it's working!!! I'd played around with foods and Fiber and Water and found that wasn't helping with TIMING. It might make things more comfortable, but didn't help regulate the frequency. But the Activia is accomplishing that.

How often can you safetly take MOM? I drink at least 80 ounces of Water a day and feel like all I eat is Protein, unless I go light on the protein and have fresh green veggies.

What flavor Activa is the best? Is is supersweetened with Splenda and aspertame?

Thanks.

Hey Mike,

For immediate relief use- Milk of Magnesia

Since you are eating less you are going to have less or more infrequent BM's this is normal. or so doctor kowalski said.

But adding Fiber into your diet will help also.

I usually drink at least one Special K protien Water everyday. It has 5 grams of protien and 5 grams of fiber. Extra protien yippi...

I also use Fiber Sure. one heaping teaspoon has 5 grams of fiber. Benefiber is also good but you actually get more bang for your buck with the Fiber Sure since Benefiber only has 3 grams of fiber in 2 teaspoons.

I put in a couple of heaping teaspoons of Fiber Sure. It mixes very well in warm or room temperature drinks once it is mixed in you can't taste it at all. If mixing in COLD drinks make sure you shake it real well. You can also put it in Soup and sauses.

WARNING THOUGH if you are just starting on fiber, your body needs to adjust to the extra fiber so may need some GasX for the first few days... ALSO start slow do not just go and add 30 grams of fiber to your diet the first day you will not be a happy camper. Start with 5 or 10 for a few days and Work up to it and let your body adjust or you will get the runs and very painful gas. NO FUN

You also must get in enough Water when doing extra fiber.

SO I recommend putting a teaspoon in a 16 ounce bottle of water or whatever you want to drink. Do this a few times a day and you will get in your fiber and also get in your fluids.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
