4-Wheeling after the band? Weird question...

Recommended Posts

Hello lapband friends! 4-wheeling (actual ATV's, not in a jeep or anything) is one of my hobbies. I hadn't thought about it until recently, but will I still be able to go? Normally....we ride kind of rough terrain, so I get bounced around quite a bit. I was just wandering if this would be harmful. :) Would it bounce my band loose or anything? Anyone know personally? Any info / experience sharing would help.

Thanks so much!

My husband and I go jeeping in the woods all the time. I am talking over rocks, through ponds and other major obstacles and I get bounced all over the place. Once you have recovered from your surgery, you will be fine.

Honestly, I waited about five weeks. Mostly because my port was sore for a very long time and the bouncing around was too uncomfortable for me.

My husband and I 4-wheel all of the time. Granted, I was banded in December 2007 and we did not go wheeling until about April other than around town in the deep snow, so had plenty of time for healing. My port gets tender for a couple of days, depending on the length of time wheeling and the terrain, but it is nothing that hangs around for long. I ensure that I take LOTS of Water and a couple of Protein Bars with us as we never know when we will make it back to the truck for lunch. Have fun wheelin'.

I ride dirtbikes, street bikes, and horses. I had my surgery on August 12th. As soon as I got home I was on my street bike, but it hurt pretty bad when I went over bumps. My doctor told me not to ride horses until 3 months after my surgery because the bouncing might make the band slip (but Im riding in a horse show this weekend anyway :) . I wouldent dare get on a dirtbike [or ATV] until a couple months after my surgery thou. All that bouncing around could make your band slip if it hasent been long enough after your surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
