What does restriction feel like to you?

Recommended Posts

I've never hiccuped since I was banded but I've eaten a lot a couple of times. I don't have any restriction yet, even with my first fill earlier this week so when I do start gettting some restriction, will I hiccup, too? That sure sounds better than unexpected PBing or throwing up.

S. Missy: I think there are quite a few people that experience hiccups when they are full. Hiccups are an early warning sign for me. If I eat one more bite once I start hiccupping, I get stuck. So I'm thankful for that. My DH will even take my plate and scrape it off for me. After 9 months, he knows when it's time for me to stop. He hates for me to be miserable and uncomfortable. He's been so good through all this, and is my biggest supporter. A constant source of encouragement.....

Yours and mine both -- although I don't always appreciate it like I should! Even the kids get in on it now. Like Nana said, it's all about pacing for me as well. I've learned to take the 1st bite and then sit and wait and my 5-year-old never fails to ask if I am stuck. I tell her no, I am just waiting. :P Because if I don't, then I will get stuck. It's like it gets air bubbles in between bites unless I eat slowly. The hiccups thing just started last week but it is a pretty cool indicator (much cooler than a PB anyway!)

Restriction is a pressure or dull ache in my left rib cage area when I've had enough to eat. It can be hiccups if I need to quit eating. When I get stuck, which is totally different than restricition, It feels like a flaming golf ball in the middle of my chest between my boobs. I don't get stuck very often, and rarely if ever PB. But the restriction is always there, reminding me not to overeat.

Aubrie,

The way you described it is right on target! Exactly the way it feels! Need to print it out to remind me!

Thanks!

Hiccups are the thing for me also.... They started after my 2nd fill... but it is strange that when it was about time for me to get another fill it seemed like the fill that i had gotten 3-weeks earlier had just started to kick in.... but the hiccups are the indicator for me...

I was only banded on 8-14 but I'm familiar with restriction. I don't know how long it will last before my first fill, but the pressure in my left rib cage is right on! Sometimes it's hard to breath in after I've had something to eat (drink really). A pressure and tightness would be how I describe it. In fact, I just had a vanilla Protein Shake a couple of hours ago, must have drank it too fast, and wha-la!, restriction pain.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
