Questions about pre-op eating

Recommended Posts

Im allowed to get into pudding, yogurt, fudgesicles 3-4 days after surgery. Do you think applesauce and mashed potatoes would fall into the category too. They are the same texture as pudding and yogurt and I know a friend who did this.

Also when finally able to eat, what were some of the reg. foods that you first get into that are easy on the band?

Thanks for the help!

According to the diet given to me by my doctor I can eat mashed potatoes and applesauce in the mushie stage. However, this stage doesn't start for me until day 15 post op. Actually I am not allowed to have the yogurt and SF pudding until day 8 post op. Again this is just my diet instructions from my doctor. Every doctor seems to do it a little differently.

The reason for the dietary restrictions after surgery aren't for the band...they are for your stomach. You do not want to put food into your stomach that will cause it to contract (digest) because that will pull on your stitches.

I would recommend against the applesauce and mashed potatoes. Both of those are basically pureed foods (mushies). The yogurt and pudding liquify almost immediately once they get into your hot body, so your stomach doesn't have to squish it up.

As always, every doctor is different so you may want to ask your doctor for his/her opinion.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
