Sleep apnea testing prior to surgery???

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Just wondering something...I think I might have sleep apnea (went on vacation and my friend said I would stop breathing and then jerk awake!!), but I have done a small sleep test (that is required by my doctor before they can send me to a sleep study). The test said that I don't have apnea, but I still jerk awake, and sleep really bad most nights. I am having band surgery in October. Do you think it would be worth it, to go for a sleep study...or wait for the surgery and see if that helps first??

Any opinons would be great!!!

Honestly this is really a question you should be asking your doctor.

If you do infact have sleep apnea you should really have a c-pap machine.

my sister has sleep apnea and has the machine and she is sleeping so much better now. Explain to your doctor all of your symptoms and request that he send you for the sleep study. It can't hurt any to ask.

If you choose not to and you do have sleep apnea after surgery and weightloss it should improve or go away.

Good luck

I had a sleep study as part of my pre-op testing. I was a lower BMI to start (36), so I needed to prove 2 comobities to qulify for insurance to approve me for surgery. sleep Apnea qualifies as a comobitiy according to my insurance at the time--Aetna.

However, they found I did not have Sleep Apnea. The study was easy and didn't interfere with my schedule. I arrived at 9pm and was released the next morning at 6am.

Yes - call your surgeon and discuss this situation. Discovering you have Sleep Apnea help you with getting approved by insurance, if you are still in that stage.

I would request a study from your doctor, so they can refer you.

I wasn't sure if I had sleep apnea or not, and I did the sleep study and now have a cpap. My sleep has definitely improved! I am much more rested then I was before.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
