newbie... considering surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi folks...

I'm 61, male, BMI 37.9.

I'm going to read these forums, before I start asking a lot of questions, but if you have any suggestions for me, I'm interested.

Thanks

Many surgeons and/or insurance companies require a minimum of 40 BMI to be approved for surgery. If you plan to use insurance, your first step needs to be checking with your carrier to see what their criteria are for approval.

Welcome and best wishes.....

Thanks Gayle... yeah, I am in Ontario Canada and I'm not sure what the situation is for our local insurance. Its all free insurance but it does not cover many things and I suspect Lap Band surgery my not be covered.. I dunno... further research will tell.

I do know that a local LB clinic requires a BMI of 35 so, I barely qualify.

I am going to explore all areas..and see what is what. If necessary I'll self pay.

Thanks for your interest.

Hey Rufus

Not sure how OHIP in works in Ontario but in Alberta there is some Health Care zero cost available but you need high BMI (40+) plus co-morbidities plus a multi-year qualification program.

The Toronto clinics are supposed to be good but I think they are all private so you would be self-pay.

Thanks Cujo... It looks like I'll be self paying, so its probably Mexico or Denver for me.

If you are thinking of Mexico, consider Dr Ortiz at the Obesity Control Centre in TJ. That who did mine and my wife's and we had great experience.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
